A ProfessioNOLE Guide to Career Resources at FSU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

It can be extremely stressful thinking about the future and what to do to get that dream job or internship, but don’t fret! The perks of being an FSU student just got better. Here are three golden steps to start your professional journey with resources provided by FSU.

The FSU Career Center is a great tool to become familiar with what can be done to improve your professional basics, such as your resume and interview skills. You can even receive personalized and tailored guidance from a specialist at the success center. They can help you map out possible steps to take to further your professional goals. Aside from these resources for FSU students, we can label LinkedIn as the “it” platform for professional development and even recruiting. If you haven’t made an account, this is also a fully accessible career tool for anyone!

1. Building your Resume

This is a great way to begin your career journey. A resume café hosted by the Career Center can serve as the key to that perfect LinkedIn profile and first impression. They host STEM-specific or all-major resume cafes virtually or in person. Resumes show much of what potential employers might want to see. It’s a small (but crucial) representation of yourself, so try to make sure you’re capturing the skills you want displayed on this paper! You can keep up to date by subscribing to the career center where they send out weekly newsletters with pop-ups and events.

2. Dressing to impress

Once you’ve got an idea of what your skills are and have a clean resume down, it’s time to dress the part. Being presentable to an employer is a great way to showcase your professionalism and overall persona. Some jobs or internships may not necessarily require you to go in a pencil skirt and blazer, but it’s always great to look cleaned up and professional. I usually go for a button-down, simple black slacks, a slicked-back ponytail, and flats. This is a great basic outfit for most interviews, but you can dress up as needed!

The ProfessioNole clothing closet, located in the Dunlap Student Success Center near Traditions Way Garage, allows FSU students to obtain articles of clothing per semester, and guess what? You can keep them for free! This is an awesome resource for students who may not have the means to purchase business attire. It can get pricey, so it’s great to take advantage of this resource!

3. The Seminole Futures Career Fair

This is a bit more specific, but it’s still a great opportunity that happens every year at FSU and is the largest fair of the year! This spring, the Seminoles Future Career Fair took place on Jan. 25 at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. This career fair consisted of internships and job opportunities. Because you have a resume and a wardrobe to present yourself, this is the time to speak to the employers you’ve been searching for. The Career Center newsletter usually sends out information about what companies will be hiring at the fair and what you can do to prepare for it. A list of companies is provided, as well as a map to help you navigate through the tables you want to hit and make an impression on. Be sure to look at those and plan your time accordingly!

Now that you have your three golden steps to getting more professioNOLE, explore your interests and try to make impressions on everyone you can. You never know who could help you!
