How to Deal With a Problematic New Employee

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

1. You just realized that a new employee is starting to ruin the vibe at work.

2. Don’t freak out, you have the power to make this situation better or not. This person is new and coming into your territory, remember that.

3. Now depending on how this person is ruining your vibe, there are ways to come about this. You could either be straight up with this individual, say they’re causing a hostile environment. OR say you already did that, and they keep acting up. Go to a manager that you know will get something done. Some managers will brush it off and others will take it seriously. Hopefully you’re in a situation that allows you the option to go to a manager that cares.

4. If you feel like going to a manager may be a bold move, or maybe you feel like you’re being overdramatic, maybe bring it up to some of your co-workers. Obviously don’t go into the conversation with a negative thought on said individual, but try to ease the conversation in a way that they would feel comfortable letting you know how they feel. For example, “Hey I was talking to Jane the other day and she said something kind of off the shoulder to me…”

5. Okay, so now you’ve made a decision. Either you have reported the issue, or decided that this was not that big of a deal, or that this was a you problem. Whatever the case is this person came to your place of work and just interrupted your peace (the small amount you have at work). My advice at this point, is to ignore them. Just do your best to be cordial, amicable, nice, just be cool.
