Campus Cutie: Cindy Nelson

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

Cat-hat knitter extraordinaire and possibly Bernie Sanders’ biggest supporter, Cindy Nelson is a very passionate, involved, and crafty individual. With her knitting and sewing skills, it is no wonder why she is President of FSU’s Craft Club and is everyone’s go-to-gal for costume making and alterations. If you enjoy cats and Shakespeare, and your idea of a fun date is browsing the yarn section of A.C. Moore, then Cindy Nelson is the girl for you!

Hometown: Quincy

Year: 2017

Major: Geography with a concentration in geographical information system with English and Spanish minors

What are you involved with on campus?

“I am the president of Craft Club and the treasurer of Green Team. And I’m also involved in the Hilltop Players and the symphonic band. And I write for Her Campus!”

What do you love most about your major?

“I like that it combines many areas of study. It’s a major that allows me to dabble in [everything from] political science to environmental studies to history to information technology. I had a lot of trouble picking a major because I like too many things and geography allows me to do a lot things.”

What is your favorite section in AC Moore?

“The yarn section, of course!”

What is your favorite Shakespeare play and why?

“I really like The Merchant of Venice and I also like As You Like It. Both of them have strong female characters that get themselves involved in the story’s progression. They’re also not afraid to break traditional gender norms. Willy Shakes in my bro.”

If you could move anywhere in the world where would it be?

“Part of me wants to say have a little goat farm outside of Dublin. Another part wants me to go back to Japan because it’s got efficient cities and beautiful countrysides. Seattle is also cool.”

What is your motto?

“Everything bad is just a phase. Things pass and there will be more cats to pet.”

What anime do you refuse to watch?

“I’m proud to say I’ve never watched a single Naruto episode.”

What are some of your hobbies?

“Knitting, sewing, binge watching Netflix and petting my cat.”

Who do you look up to the most?

“Part of me wants to say my cat. But the better part of me wants to say my brother, Andrew. He’s my big brother and he’s really smart. He’s very logical and we don’t always see eye to eye, [but] he’s always someone who grounds me. He encourages me without coddling me.”

Tell us about your cat.

“His name is Hal! His full name is Harold Mittens Nelson. He is a two year old Tabby and I tease my younger brother by saying that Hal is my favorite little brother. He has a little nose that I like to bop. He’s the best kitty in the whole wide world. And I’m just really happy that we have him because I wanted a cat for a long time. When I get sad I think to myself “Cindy, you can’t be sad because you have a cat.”
