Clothing You Should Definitely Invest In

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

I’ll admit, it’s exciting to buy new and trendy clothing, but there is nothing worse than regretting the purchase of an item you only end up wearing a couple of times. Thankfully, you don’t have to sacrifice style for cost, as long as you invest in your wardrobe wisely. There are many affordable alternatives to keeping up with trends, while still acquiring quality pieces of clothing to add to your wardrobe. If you’re unsure about how much use you’ll get out of a particular piece, try purchasing an alternative made with lower quality materials, renting, or even thrifting a similar item! But if you find yourself getting a lot of wear out of a particular piece after a few months, consider investing in a better quality version.

Regardless of current trends, any smart dresser will integrate their wardrobe with timeless pieces they can wear again and again. Below is a list of the staples I’d consider investing in!

   1. Leather Jacket

Quality leather notoriously wears well with time. Leather jackets can be dressed up or down and go along with a wide variety of outfits. You can also get away with wearing a leather jacket in practically any season!

   2. Boots

Regardless of rain or snow, your boots will experience significant wear and tear, so investing in a quality pair will ensure your feet always stay warm and dry. An added bonus is that a classic pair of boots will never go out of style.

   3. Denim (Especially jeans!)

Jeans are one of the most versatile pieces of clothing which can be dressed up or down. Investing in a good pair will ensure that they keep their form longer and are less likely to rip or show wear. There’s nothing better than a reliable pair of jeans you know you can count on!

   4. Tote Bag

Tote bags prove useful time and time again — especially if you’re living in the city. An all-purpose tote that can withstand frequent use is definitely a wardrobe staple.

    5. Sweaters

Investing in quality materials, such as cashmere, ensures that your sweaters will last a really long time, rather than fall apart after a few washes. Basic colors and patterns work with any outfit and can be worn so many different ways.

     6. Jewelry

If you find a design or piece of jewelry you love, it’s totally worth investing in the highest quality materials. With fine jewelry you’ll never need to worry about discoloration or the piece falling apart.

     7. Coats

When the temperature is super cold you’ll want a coat with enough layers guaranteed to keep you warm. It’s worth spending a little extra money on a quality coat that will last for many years.
