Todays Good News Spooky Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

Since Halloween is right around the corner, I thought it would be appropriate to share some good news with a festive twist to it. I have found a couple of stories that will not only get you into the Halloween spirit, but will also remind you of the kindness that is around us.

Brocktoberfest

  1. A seven year old boy by the name of Brock Hardwick, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that affects his spine and brain. His mother, Brittney Horton, came up with a way to cheer little Brock up and shine light on their situation. Brocks favorite holiday is Halloween, so to cheer him up she asked friends and family to send Halloween cards to Brock on social media. Calling it “Brocktoberfest”.  They weren’t expecting much. So much to their surprise they have received over 1,000 Halloween cards, well wishes, and toys from all kinds of people. His mother told ABC that these acts of kindness from people all over the world has “made him smile a whole lot more.”

The Halloween Gift

  1. Students from the Virginia Commonwelath  University School of Medicine met 16 year old Alexs Hayes and her family back in August. When meeting them, that’s when they were told that Alex had a rare chromosomal mutation and due to that mutation she is bound to a wheelchair. In August they also learned how much of a lover she is to farm animals. So some students and alumni came together to build a barn costume that will prop right on her wheel chair. They spent over 200 hours building this costume to perfection. Once it was done, Alex wore it to a Halloween costume party where her family dressed up as barn animals. Even Old Mcdonald, other wise known as Alex’s grandpa made an appearance, and stated that it was obvious how happy she was because her eyes “lit up” with joy.

A Sweet Plane Ride

  1. This story happened around this time last year, but I found it and I just HAD to share. A father was flying out of Boston to San Francisco, with his 3 year old daughter on Halloween night. He didn’t want her to miss out on all of the Halloween fun so he wrote a letter and passed it out to all the passengers on his plane with a little piece of candy that read, “My 3 year old daughter Molly was bummed that she couldn’t go trick or treating this year due to this flight… so I decided to bring trick or treating to her. If you are willing, when my little donut comes down the isle please drop this in her basket. You’ll make her Halloween! If you are unwilling, no worries, just pass the treat back to me. Thanks so much!” A woman posted the note and a picture of Molly trick or treating on the plane, on twitter stating that he was “dad of the year.” This tweet was shared around the world and received thousands of retweets. I hope that you all have a happy and safe Halloween!
