Support Miami Thrift Stores

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

Thrift stores are filled to the brim with hidden treasures and niche collectibles. Decades of fashion trends ranging from beyond the early ’60s and late ’90s all wind up stacked upon each on racks. Interesting artifacts, funky furniture, and an endless sea of how-to-cook books all find a home at thrift-stores. Miami has a wonderful selection of thrift stores that not only provide you with a unique new look but also give back to the community who directly benefit from your help.

The Dragonfly Thrift Boutique, nestled within Little Havana, was created by LEAP for Ladies, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to assist women as they transition back into society from prison. LEAP for Ladies provides incarcerated women with mentorship work, transformational education, entrepreneurial training, and a place to earn a liveable income. Proceeds from the thrift store are funneled back to the organization to empower women and give them the necessary tools to achieve their potential. The thrift store also holds book club and presentational speakers that discuss women issues, such as, women prison conditions and human trafficking. You can learn more about them on Instagram @dragonflythrift and @leapforladies, as well as their website: Dragonfly Thrift Boutique.

The thrift store provides extra funding to assist homeless women and children in a safe and welcoming environment that offers after-school tutoring, dental and cosmetic services, counseling, health and wellness, and much more. The thrift store raises public awareness to the issues of women’s homelessness and provides retail/barista job training programs.  The Out of the Closet Miami Thrift Store, also located near Wynwood, is part of a global non-profit organization that directly helps people living with HIV. Every dollar you spend at the thrift store, 96 cents are collected to help fund AIDS healthcare foundations and HIV/AIDS programs in Miami and across the country. The thrift store also provides free HIV testing performed by certified professionals with results ready in under an hour. Outside of the thrift store, you can find an AHF Pharmacy where you can get prescriptions filled, donate, and receive free fast home deliveries. You can learn more about them on Instagram @outoftheclosetmiami and @outofthecloset, as well as their website: Out of the Closet.

All these wonderful thrift stores are always welcoming of any help they can get, and you can help improve our community by shopping, donating, volunteering, or simply spreading the word.
