At 26 years old, Mac Miller was at the peak of his music career. He released one of the most inspirational albums this past August, and he was weeks away from going on tour. He expressed his excitement over social media, and just a day before his passing, he tweeted he wanted to go on tour already. Mac Miller was pronounced dead, early afternoon on Sept. 7, 2018 from an apparent drug overdose. Though his family has chosen to keep things private for the moment, they did release a statement saying “He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers.” Mac Miller was a beacon of light for so many of his fans, as many people who listened to his music grew up alongside him.

His first mixtape K.I.D.S was an anthem to many who were in high school or close to. He produced many albums that really showed how he grew up, the struggles he faced, and many of his listeners fell in love with the rawness of his words and the soulfulness of his music. Watching him grow alongside all of us, we felt a part of the life he was living. His innovative way of telling his life story through each album he put out was one of the main reasons he was such an amazing and inspirational artist.

I want to thank Mac for being a guiding hand in what most of us have used as an escape through his music. He will be remembered as someone who was never afraid to be himself or speak out on matters that were important to him. He was always open with his battle of substance and alcohol abuse, and that resonated with many of his fans. He spoke out about political matters, his relationships, his career, and despite it all; he could always be found with a smile on his face.

His sudden death is one that hit close to home for many people, as it was definitely unexpected. Many people on Twitter and other social media platforms had spoken about how it truly felt like we all lost our best friend. Many artists also shared their feelings and condolences on the situation, all mentioning how he had helped them in some way or made them feel at home no matter the situations they were in.

Please, check in on your friends and family, and check in on yourself.
