If you don’t know by now, succulents have become the new “it” plant of Instagram. Every blogger, influencer or motivation page has posted at least one picture with a mix of succulents.

Succulents are plants that store water in their leaves that thrive in tropical weather and require little to no water. This makes them the perfect starter plant for anyone wanting to grow some green thumbs and give back to the environment.  Not only are they hard to kill and extremely affordable, but they are sold everywhere from Amazon to your local hardware store. You might even know some succulents types yourself, like Aloe Vera and Cacti.

To start your succulent collection, you will need perlite mix soil, a clay planter with a drainage hole, a mister or water bottle, and access to plenty of sunlight.

If you’re going to create your succulent arrangement it is essential to do a little bit of research into each plant you will be using. For example, cacti need a lot of sunlight but little to no water, while Echeverria’s need indirect lighting for a couple of hours a day. If making a lot of decision makes you nervous there are plenty of local stores that sell pre-made arrangements that guarantee a perfect match.

The most critical step in taking care of your succulents is being mindful about watering them. You should never water your succulents daily, or even every 2 to 3 days. An excellent way to know when you should be watering your plants is to touch the soil and make sure it feels scorched and shows a few cracks. Once you make sure, they genuinely need some water go ahead and soak them. You should be able to see water coming out of the planter’s drainage hole. That’s when you know you did watering right and that you won’t need to water your plants for another week or two.

Now that you have all the information you need to start your newest plant obsession you can go ahead and buy one, two, or even a couple of arrangements. It never hurts to fill your space with beautiful plants that will always add a little bit of life to your dullest days.
