Four Stages of Grief After Finishing Your Show

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

If you’re living in the year 2017 and you enjoy the use of technology, chances are, you’ve binge watched at least one show. We can also, for the sake of this article, assume you watched said show on Netflix or Hulu. We have all fallen in love with characters and been consumed by their fictional lives as well as their drama, happiness and struggles. We are invested in these shows! They comfort us. We get home and watch at least an episode, or an entire season. You tell yourself “just one more,” when the screen tells you the next episode will begin in x amount of seconds. What about when that screen has no “next episode.” We all love our shows. We all go through withdrawal when they are over. Here are the stages of “my show ended” grief.

Stage One; Denial. You’re sitting there looking at your screen. The credits begin to role and you naturally look to the bottom right of your screen to count down the seconds until the next episode begins. But it is not there. You look again just in case; it just couldn’t be over yet. You just started this season, how is it over?

Stage Two; Depression. You realize that there is no countdown! You look at the show Netflix is recommending in apology to your show ending. “Watch Now!” But you can’t, you can’t move on that quickly. Your characters! What’s next for them! Netflix cannot heal your broken heart anymore; your show is over.

Stage Three; Anger. Your eyes go wide. Your mind goes to the wait. The wait for the next season. Weeks, Months, maybe a whole year for a Netflix original. What about realizing you’ll have to watch your show on live television with commercials. The audacity! No you won’t watch the next season on TV, who watches commercials anymore. You won’t do it.

Stage Four; Acceptance. Netflix closes the window when you don’t accept its apology recommendation. You stare at your screen and tell yourself, “I waited for last season, it went by quick. I’ll just have to wait for the next one too.” And so, you have accepted, and the cycle begins again.

Happy Watching Friends!
