Advice Column: Freshmen Year Do’s & Don’ts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

A new school year calls for incoming freshmen. Freshman year of college can be one of the most confusing yet fun times experienced in one’s undergraduate career. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts on how to survive your first year at FIU.

DO’S:

DO get to know your professors.

Building a relationship with one of your favorite professors will not only benefit you throughout the duration of the course but also in the future. If ever an issues arises with your grade in the class, regularly communicating with your professor may encourage them to be more gracious and understanding with regards to your work. When it is time to apply for grad school, jobs, and internships, your favorite professor will be able to write your recommendation letters.

DO get involved on campus.

FIU has numerous clubs and organizations that sparks everyone’s interests. Whether it be the Quidditch club or SGA (Student Government Association), getting involved in extra-curricular activities makes your college years worthwhile. “Turning up” isn’t the only way to enjoy your social life.

DO take advantage of inexpensive services on campus.

We’re college students, not millionaires. We all have had and will have financial struggles during our college years. Do your wallet a favor and use the free services FIU provides. The writing center, tutoring sessions and the recreational center all provide services that help with both academic and well-being success for very cheap prices. SPC and other organizations on campus, also have events filled with free giveaways AND free food! Who doesn’t like free stuff?

DON’TS:

DON’T party every weekend.

Young adults taste their first real dose of freedom during their college years. Freshmen, tend to be reckless and go out every chance available. Don’t get too crazy. Sure, college encourages a great social life but never forget why you’re here in the first place; your education!

DON’T procrastinate.

In high school, the work load was light enough to put off studying and working on assignments for later. This is not the case in college. Most professors mainly base your overall grade in the course by a midterm and a final exam. These exams usually cover all the material you have learned throughout the semester. It is very important to regularly review your notes after every session of class. Cramming will not help you pass a class.

DON’T eat out all the time.

The “Freshman 15” is real. With all the dining options on campus, it is very easy to eat fast food all day every day. Make sure to cook your own meals sometimes. If you are unable to cook a meal due to the lack of kitchen appliances in your dorm, go for the healthier meal options at dining places on campus.

Enjoy your Freshmen year! Play hard and work harder!
