NYFW 2023 was a big hit this February with a majority of old and new big brands coming onto the runway. While we stay appreciating brands that have been a part of the runway for years, it’s time to admire a new and upcoming brand called “Maison De Hoe.”

Maison De Hoe is a contemporary designer brand, created by Hanwei Su, that fuses Chinese and Western codes showing a mix of the urban and rural lifestyle. The brand focuses on being pragmatic and values a strong and empowered personality.

Their latest collection was dropped through the NYFW Runway in early February. Its inspiration came from the farms and architecture presented in suburban Chinese villages, while the style of the collection represents the bold and cool persona of New York. The pieces are unique and intricate with a mix of variant designs. Hanwei Su wanted to show people her perspective on fashion through this collection that depicts the fusion between the Chinese countryside and the urban style of New York.

As you may have noticed the brand’s name ends with “Hoe,” which is a word used to objectify women in a negative way. However, designer Su, has turned this “negative” word into something powerful. Since the inspiration of her brand came from rural China, she wanted to use “Hoe” (which is also a strong, sharp gardening tool) to show its power, especially through the female gaze. The message of the brand and its latest collection tells a story of women being recognized for their hard work and being equal in male dominant industries.

Hanwei Su is not only noticed for her well-built, cultural, and inclusive brand, but also for keeping her topics of conversation on equality, women’s rights, sustainability, and humanitarian affairs. She implements all of these matters in her brand, as well. She was awarded the Tishman Fund for Excellence in Climate, Environmental Justice, and Sustainability. Su was also a finalist in the IYDC Sustainable Fashion Competition while her beautiful designs have been featured in various publications.

“Maison De Hoe” reveals a cultural story of China and New York focusing on sustainability, inclusivity, and female power. Check out www.globalfashioncollective.com/maison-de-hoe for more information on this thriving brand that appreciates the many viewpoints of fashion and culture.
