A Review of Taylor Swift’s “1989”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

It’s here! Taylor Swift’s 1989 is something we’ve anticipated for months now, and truthfully, I don’t think we could have waited another day for these songs. This soundtrack will make for many great car rides with your friends, singing and dancing along.

Let’s just talk about how Taylor Swift is the best, I mean, isn’t she? First off, she surprised her fans by releasing the album a full 45 minutes earlier than the expected time (thanks for considering my bedtime, Tay)! Once Swifties started listening to “1989,” thousands of enthusiastic tweets proved that this album could be her best yet.

Her first three releases “Shake it Off,” “Out of the Woods,” and “Welcome to New York,” were only a small preview of this amazing album had to offer. They did, however, reveal that this album was going to be completely different from her previous releases (“Taylor Swift,” “Fearless”, “Speak Now,” and “Red”). “1989” has no country music on it – just pop. Which at first was shocking, but Swift has certainly proved herself in this genre.

I have been listening to this album on repeat, from the minute it was released and downloaded into my iTunes library. To be honest, I was excited right off the bat. Her first three preview releases kind of set the tone for what the rest of the album was going to be like. Two of my personal favorites (already) are “Blank Space,” (Track 2) and “Style,” (Track 3). Both of these songs have such catchy rhythms, and I cannot stop singing them.

Unfortunately, though, it’s not all fun and games. With the positivity of the album release, comes the negativity of the disappointed fans, or critics. The main complaint that I have heard about the album thus far is the fact that this is so unlike the typical Taylor Swift. While I have to disagree with these comments of hatred because I prefer pop music to country music, I can see why 1989 could be a letdown to some. Like I said, this album definitely isn’t the country Taylor we used to know (but we still love her, don’t we!). Fans will listen to 1989 anyways (despite their bitterness of change), though, because they are that committed to her legacy—even if they do miss old classics like Our Song and Picture to Burn.

If you were never really a Taylor Swift fan, now is your chance to get to know this new artist she is becoming. This transformation to pop-stardom was definitely a change for the better, especially in terms of maintaining a new audience. It is the perfect time for her to appeal to the non-country-music fans, and still entertain her old listeners at the same time!

“1989” is now available on iTunes for download, or for purchase in stores! Definitely, if you haven’t already, check it out!
