New York’s First Men’s Fashion Week: What Does This Mean for Menswear?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, New York Fashion Week arrived on February 12th and will continue until the 19th.

This year New York Fashion week is extra special because there will be two times as much fashion to look forward to. For the first time in the history of the fashion industry, New York Fashion Week will be creating a menswear week on July 13-16th.

Steven Kolb, Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, shared that this exciting moment in menswear with this announcment, “gives the designers a business platform to show during their market dates, and is an opportunity to demonstrate the collective talent of an important segment of our industry” [via The New York Times].

The introduction of a menswear fashion week further exemplifies how far we have broken down the boundaries of sexism. Fashion is no longer just for women, but instead a culture-wide form of self-expression.

The creation of a mens-wear only fashion show is a positive change for the future. This shows that women and men can have the same hobbies and interests. There’s no reason to prevent men from strutting down the catwalk and looking just as fierce as women!

The Daily also recently announced the launch of The Daily Front Row Men’s, a new magazine for men set to release during this new men’s fashion week exhibition- taking place in July 2015. In addition to the publication, there will also be a Men’s Fashion Awards debuting the week.
