FOOTBALL ON THE BRAIN: RIHANNA TO PLAY SUPERBOWL HALF-TIME SHOW

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Football and Rihanna. Perhaps a collaboration we never saw coming, but one that we’re definitely excited to watch. On September 25th, Rihanna posted a picture of her holding an NFL football on Instagram, and fans went crazy. Soon after, the press started reporting that, by no surprise, Rihanna will be the halftime performer for Super Bowl LVII in February 2023. Here are some of my thoughts about it.

Rihanna is undeniably one of the best female singers of our generation. Hits from “Umbrella” to “Diamonds,” “Work,” “Needed Me,” “Love on the Brain,” and more. Rihanna is one talented singer. However, Rihanna hasn’t put out an album since 2016 with Anti. I’m hoping she drops a surprise single or album right before the show, but I’m not sure that will happen. Besides music, Rihanna has been a busy woman, working on other aspirations, with the expansion of Fenty Beauty, Savage x Fenty, her lingerie brand and annual fashion show, and more, not to mention having a baby with A$AP Rocky. Some people are therefore confused as to why she’s playing the show since she hasn’t put out music in six years. However, I think the show and Rihanna will be amazing nonetheless, as Rihanna’s musical catalog speaks for itself. Now let’s talk about special guests.

Rihanna has worked with plenty of other artists in her career. These artists include Drake, Eminem, Jay-Z, Shakira, Nicki Minaj, and more. In an ideal world, I would love to see Drake and Rihanna sing “Work” and rekindle their relationship. However, after the 2016 debacle, where Drake confessed his love to Rihanna on national TV on the VMAs while presenting Rihanna with The Video Vanguard award, Rihanna completely dodged his kiss and proclamation of love. Poor Drake. (On another note, Rihanna’s performance for the Vanguard Award blew me away, and that’s what I expect for the halftime show, but even better.) Another special guest I am hoping for is A$AP Rocky. A$AP would also be a great performer with Rihanna and would bring the house down. The possibilities are endless. Rihanna and A$AP are new parents, as Rihanna gave birth to their son a couple of months ago. Parents who perform at the Superbowl together stay together…right? I sure hope so. In conclusion, in all honesty, will I be watching the Superbowl for football? The answer is no. I will be watching for Rihanna.
