4 Ways to Prevent Dry Skin this Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

There are so many wonderful things that winter brings: beautiful white snow, the holiday season, and fantastic holiday treats! Unfortunately, the winter months bring some not-so-pretty things too, like dry skin. Whether it’s your legs or your face, every girl has struggled with how the cold weather affects her skin. Here are some ways to beat the cold and keep your skin smooth and soft this winter!

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

This winter, water is your best friend. Water keeps your skin cells hydrated, delivers essential nutrients to skin cells, rejuvenates skin tissue, and increases elasticity (aka prevents wrinkles!). With all these benefits, who wouldn’t want to be drinking water?

Moisturizer is Key.

All young women should start moisturizing now, so they can preserve their glowing youthful skin for as long as possible. Moisturizers are important all year round, but especially in the winter. Some great moisturizers for the winter include: Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer, Clinique Moisture Surge Intense, and Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer.

Use a Gentle Face Wash.

Exfoliating soaps and face scrubs will not get rid of the flakes! It will only inflame and irritate your already sensitive skin. Some gentle face washes to calm irritated skin are: Fresh Soy Cleanser, Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, and Eucerin Ultra Sensitive Soothing Cleansing Lotion.

Take Colder Showers.

I know it’s super tempting to make your shower as warm as possible in the winter, but super hot showers dehydrate your skin. Colder showers prevent your skin from losing natural oils. If cold showers are definitely not for you, dragging an ice cube across your face for 2-3 minutes daily will help too.
