A majority of my friends at other schools are members of sororities and fraternities, and they just can’t seem to understand how I survive without it here at Fairfield. They often ask me how my school’s party atmosphere functions without Greek life, but I always give the standard “we have beach houses” response. Fairfield stands perfectly fine on its own without Kappa Kappa Omega Chi Delta Gamma whatever. We have day drinks, the Sea Grape, events like Prez Ball, Clam Jam, and sports formals. And lets not knock the townhouses, either. Here are the top reasons why it’s good that Fairfield does not have Greek life.
1.Hazing
As a freshman, it is hard enough trying to fit into your new niche. I’ve heard way too many horror stories from boys having to kill a pig to girls writing harmful words on pledge’s bodies with sharpies. To believe that anything good could come out of recruitment is debatable.
2. Forced Friendships
It seems like whoever is in your sorority or fraternity are the only people you can hang out with. At schools with Greek life, there are always events that are exclusive to certain sororities or frats, and we just don’t like that kind of discrimination.
3. Maintenance of Physical Appearance
I’ve read my friends sorority e-mails about their respective events dress codes. They were told to wear “egg shell NOT white” dresses, and tanning, teeth whitening, and hitting the gym were highly encouraged. No one has time or money for that.
4. Money
One downside to Greek life is the dues that go hand in hand with membership. Funds are collected each semester to pay for parties, alcohol, apparel, and events. Not to mention the amount of money you will spend on new wardrobes to fit the desired dress codes and requirements.
