Ottery St Mary Tar Barrels- a Unique Experience

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Remember, Remember the 5th of November… Bonfire Night, Guy Fawkes Night, Fireworks Day whatever you want to call it, the 5th November has come around again and is a great excuse to celebrate with fireworks, hog roast and toffee apples!

Here in Exeter we like to do things a little differently, so following the traditional firework party on Saturday night at Double Locks, we at HCX will be spending the evening of the 5th at Ottery St Mary, watching, not fireworks, but Flaming Tar Barrels!!

Now, this may seem like a bit of a strange concept but it is a tradition that has prevailed in Ottery for hundreds of years! Local men will run through the streets with flaming barrels to cheers from the crowds. Regardless of health and safety these men continue this tradition each year and we can guarantee you, it is not an event to be missed!

As well as the barrels, you can enjoy a plethora of stalls selling everything from doughnuts to Hog Roast to Mulled Cider! If this isn’t enough to tempt you then you can release your inner child and enjoy the fairground rides, which are on offer!

Although tickets sold by RAG are now sold out, you can still get to Ottery by taxi or even try and hitch a lift with a kind friend! However you get there we recommend you do, as this really is a once in a lifetime experience!
