Freshers 101: Relaxing Retreats

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

You’ve just woken up from your 4th night out in a row, and your hectic freshers schedule has left you feeling shattered. What you need is a bit of social TLC and, luckily for you, HCX has found some perfect places for your well-deserved time-out.

Artigiano

Conveniently located on the main high street, Artigiano stands at the ready to chase away any residual grogginess with their “beautifully crafted espresso coffee” (and take it from us, the vanilla latte is beaut). It’s a super relaxed and stylish environment, perfect for chilling out!

Oddfellows

Oddfellows is an adorable “gastro bar and cocktail lounge”: think fairy lights, think cosy, think chilled. It’s an ideal gem in which to have a slightly more relaxed evening than last night’s TP. They also serve food (hurrah!); an “English style cuisine that has been given a modern twist”.

Picture House Cinema

Sometimes, the only way you want to spend your afternoon is by kicking back and watching a film. Picture House Cinema Exeter is a branch of the UK’s largest boutique cinema operator, and they also have incredibly comfy seats and all the legroom a girl could want. They also do some awesome student deals that you fresh need to know about:

·      Free membership for freshers

·      £10 student membership for non-freshers, including two free tickets, and £2 off subsequent ticket purchases

·      Discounts of between £1 and £1.80 on standard tickets, depending on time of day

·      Half price tickets on a Monday when joining E4’s slackers Club, which is free on production of a student card

·      Free membership of E4’s Slackers’ Club and free entry to Slackers’ Club screenings

·      Discounts on selected drinks on a Monday

·      Live music in the bar every Thursday – free entry

·      Food including pizzas served daily from noon till 9pm

What more could you want?!

RUBY Diner

RUBY Diner is such a great place to relax and grab lunch with all your new flatmates, and their American diner atmosphere means that it’s loads of fun too. RUBY’s is not a hidden gem per say – it’s easy enough to find but it’s somewhere we thought you should know about right from the off!

Tea on the Green

Let’s face it, sometimes you just want a cuppa. A super fancy “high quality loose leaf tea” cuppa. Tea on the Green is in a really lovely location, situated right next to the Cathedral and ideal for long chats getting to know your new friends.

Cakeadoodledo

Here at HCX we never get tired of cake, making Cakeadoodledo one of our favourite hideaways. They say that their cakes will leave you with a “fuzzy glow of satisfaction” – that’ll do us! The saying goes “surround yourself with good people…” but to be honest if you surround yourself with cake lovers, you’ll do just fine!

So there you have it! Six perfect places to escape to when you need some time to relax.
