Fashionable TV: The Downton Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Fashion inspiration can come from anywhere, and TV shows can be a great source of style and beauty ideas. In honor of the recent return of everyone’s favorite cozy night-in drama, Downton Abbey, we’ve put together a few outfits inspired by the show’s fabulous roaring ’20s fashion. Mild spoilers are ahead, so if you haven’t yet seen Downton’s season 3 finale or season 4 premiere, you might want to catch up before you finish this article.

MARY

When we first see Lady Mary in this episode, she’s dressed completely in black, as she has been for six months. Even in mourning and after having had a baby, Mary always looks effortlessly chic. Her simple, loose shift dress can be easily reinterpreted into something much more modern and less tragic.

Though Mary is (understandably) distraught and grieving for her late husband Matthew throughout the episode, she regains some of her mojo at the end, taking an interest in the Abbey’s affairs once more. Hopefully, this means we’ll see a few more adventurous looks from her throughout the season.

Wear the dress casually, with a red scarf for a pop of warmth and color, and a black bracelet as a nod to Mary’s gorgeous and dramatic (but not entirely practical) gloves. Alternatively, glam it up with lacy heels and a more contemporary version of Mary’s jet beads.

EDITH’S DAY LOOK

Until now a perennial spinster, Mary’s sister Edith has finally found herself a man, and it definitely shows in her dress sense. When you’re in love, the small matter that your crush (Gregson) is married and unable to divorce his wife just doesn’t matter.

To meet Gregson’s literary friends on Valentine’s day, Edith dons a red print dress and a bright silk headscarf.

Give Edith’s look a bit more structure with red and black baroque-print trousers, studded flats or motorcycle boots, and a black peplum top. Add a heart locket and red lips to remind you of Edith’s first-ever Valentine’s Day spent with her love. Go bold with a red headband, or tone it down with a more neutral-colored one.

EDITH’S EVENING LOOK

Edith is on fire in this episode. Later on, she turns heads in a graceful turquoise evening gown complete with a slit skirt, beaded top, and backwards-dangling necklace.

Channel Edith’s flowy ensemble into a more seasonal, scholarly look with a green dip-hem skirt and a white polka-dot top that replicates Edith’s patterned bodice. Add low-heeled oxfords, a crossbody satchel, and beads, and you’re good to go. If you’re feeling extra Edith-esque, add a jewelled hair grip and try draping your necklace down your back. If Jennifer Lawrence can pull it off, you can too.

While abroad at Exeter, she was a huge fan of clotted cream, Topshop, and the sheep that hang out on the sides of roads; now that she's back at Kenyon, she is a fan of roaming the library sans shoes and eating Doritos too loudly on the third floor.
