Christmas Party Ideas to Spice up the Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

The Christmas season is steadily approaching and that means it’s time to party. Holidays mean free time and although we are all probably drowning in essays and freaking out over the exams in January, there is always at least one night where you are bound to take a break from the intensive research and study you are clearly doing the rest of the time. Now, since it is the holiday season, you will not be throwing any old party and simply whack on some Christmas tunes in the background. This year, you are going to throw THE Christmas party and I am here to give you some ideas of the types of events you should consider organising before the end of the year.

Ugly Christmas sweater party – We have all attended one of these. A classic but also a favourite. This (let’s be honest) is for the people who do not have time to actually organise a Christmas party. Partial disappointment if you choose to do this one but we won’t judge you too hard for it. Just ask your guests to come wearing a Christmas inspired sweater and to spice things up a little bit, hold a competition. You could even make your own sweater, that will definitely make you stand out!

Christmas drinks party – Taking the concept that went viral on TikTok but putting a Christmas-y spin on it. Each person that attends will have to bring a drink made by themselves inspired by Christmas. It could be a naughty or nice drink combo with opposite colours or the classic eggnog but adding your own personal twist to the recipe. Make it colourful, make it fun and be creative with it. You can even make some mocktail versions.

Guess the movie party – So many incredible Christmas movies have been released throughout the years and a lot of them are recognised instantly for their iconic scens. This holiday season, take it up a notch and dress up as your favourite Christmas movie character. The pictures for this one will turn out amazing.

Christmas outfit party – Similar to the previous one but again, with a twist. If two people are dressed as the same Christmas thing, they have to do a punishment. When you think of Christmas certain things automatically come to mind: Santa Claus, reindeers, snowmen… but in order to take part in this party you need to really show how much you know about Christmas. It is easy to find a Santa costume and simply go to a party dressed like that but you might want to think a little harder about your outfit if you know there will be a punishment involved. This can be anything of your choosing and is non-negotiable so only those who are willing to have a proper laugh this Christmas should be invited. The most important thing is that for this idea to work, you cannot tell anyone else what you are dressing up as.

Bring anything but a cup – There are plenty of Christmas items that could be used as a cup, you just need to use your imagination. Maybe an empty Christmas Pudding bowl, or a stocking (I suggest putting a plastic bag inside, so it doesn’t leak). The whole point of these party ideas is doing something that you have never done before so go crazy with it.

Anything but clothes Christmas related – Wrapping paper, a wreath, Christmas lights or anything else you can think of. It might be a little bit too cold for this but if you are brave enough, this party could be a good laugh. Again: creativity, creativity, creativity.

Teams party – Random names get pulled out of a hat with different categories. Each team has to dress up as a specific Christmas thing or person, for example Santa Claus, reindeer, elf and snowman. Whichever thing each person has pulled out of the hat, they have to come dressed up as which will make separate teams depending on costume. After this, you can organise games that will be played in teams and at the end, the winning team gets a special prize.

If you are feeling particularly festive, you can combine some of these party ideas and create your own version of them. These are just a few of the many things you can do with your friends and loved ones to increase the Christmas spirit and make this Christmas a truly memorable one.
