5 Ways to Avoid Weight Gain During the Christmas Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

With the Christmas holidays are fast approaching, it’s the season of friends and family gathering together to celebrate this wonderful and oh-so joyous time of year. And we all know what that means: endless treats and goodies to indulge ourselves in and wine galore. It’s often hard to say no to these delicious goodies, and so the pounds can start to increase without us even realising. When there is many-a party to attend, and many-a sparkly dress to be worn, this can be a little problematic. However, the HerCampus health and fitness team are here to the rescue. We’ve come up with a few basic and easy tips that will help you enjoy your festivities to the fullest, without perhaps looking the fullest…

1)    Don’t skip meals:

Eat a light, healthy meal a few hours before any event. People often think it is good to ‘save’ our calories, but this can often backfire. Doing this may lead you to over eating in the evening. Skipping meals in general is definitely a one-way ticket to making a habit binge eating, and your metabolism will so not thank you for it.

2)    Choose wisely:

Don’t always go for the unhealthy options. Try and consume a lot of fruit and vegetables.

3)    Pay attention:

Listen to your body. If you’re full, stop eating, and don’t go for that second helping.

4)    Limit liquid calories:

Try to keep hydrated on water, rather than just that extra bottle of wine!

5)    Stay active:

Try and do a little bit of exercise amongst all the fun. Get involved with a few Christmas fun-run perha

p.s. You can even do this with friends and family to make it more enjoyable.

Of course, Christmas is a special time dedicated to the ones we love the most. We want to enjoy ourselves, and what we don’t want to be doing is stressing about how much weight will potentially creep up on us by the time January arrives. Stressing about weight loss or gain, in any sense, isn’t healthy. The key is to be savvy about consumption; you may know it’s the festive season, but your body certainly does not! Balance your portions, stay hydrated and stay on-the-move, and you won’t be one of those poor souls Googling a quick-fix weight-loss regime in the New Year.
