The 10 HCX Survival Tips for Freshers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Dear Freshers,

Now that you have packed up all your belongings and have said your goodbyes to your parents (maybe there were a few tears), it is time to embark on what will no doubt be three incredible years of your life. Her Campus Exeter have a few points of advice for you to get through the first few weeks…

     1. Girls, do not even consider wearing heels, the pain is not worth it with Exeter’s hills.

     2. For those post night out munchies, go to Mega Kebab.

     3. Don’t stress when the lectures start. Remember that the marks you will gain this year don’t count towards your final grade. However, this does not mean that you should be super laid back! First year is a good practice to find out when you work at your best and build up knowledge that is crucial for second and third year.

     4. Try not to miss those 8.35am lectures. We all know the struggle of dragging yourself out of bed on a rainy Thursday morning, post sports social, but it is only one hour and you can always have an afternoon nap.

     5. Get your food delivered (especially if you live in Birks Grange). Carrying food back from town may not seem that bad, but when it is heavy and raining it can feel like you are climbing Everest.

     6. Try to keep your accommodation clean. Yes there are supposedly cleaners, but they will not clean if your room is too messy! You also don’t want to spend any time in the kitchen if it looks like an episode of Obsessive Compulsive Hoarder.

     7. Let the little things slide. There is no point getting into petty arguments and avoiding each other for the next month. Voice your annoyance and then put it behind you.

     8. Remember to save change for using the laundry facilities. Whilst we are on the laundry topic, it is a good idea to use the tumble driers: they may seem extortionate, but it saves your room smelling of damp washing for the next week.

     9. Save Estate Patrol’s number in your phone. They are very helpful when you cannot drag your overly drunk housemate home.

     10. We all join too many societies and do not have time for them all. Think carefully about what to join and whether you will really use it to get the most of your money. Remember you can join after Freshers’ fair if you want to wait a couple of weeks.

Finally, welcome to the University of Exeter, we wish you the best of luck and hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Yours truly,

Her Campus Exeter
