Online Blogging and Journalism Talk.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter Cornwall chapter.

On the 14th of March, the Tremough English Society hosted an event all to do with online journalism and blogging. I had the great opportunity to be involved and had a great time doing it. It was such a rewarding experience as well as being very informative.

Our very own Her Campus representatives gave a fantastic presentation about what the website is about, how to join and what the Exeter-Cornwall Chapter aims to achieve. Even though I am part of the team, I still found out a lot about Her Campus and the workings behind it.

There were three of us who gave individual talks about our blogs. First to present was second Elliott Finn with his blog thenerdnetwork.co.uk, an entertainment blog that has been running for a year and a half. Elliott gave some great advice regarding setting up, designing and running a blog.

I was next, with Elliott having said a lot I did have to strive for new points, so I used the time to show off my new and improved blog, teaandfilm.com. I stressed how important it is to make friends with creative people who can make your blog look awesome. I gave some advice for people who have not yet got the confidence to put their writing out there. It is a very scary process, but once you start it is so rewarding.

Next was our very own Beth Strong with her blog,  bethsadventuresinwonderland.co.uk. Showing a different side to blogging than mine and Elliott’s, Beth emphasised the importance of keeping a blog for yourself rather than continually writing for deadlines, as university deadlines can make lives hectic if you are trying to keep to blog deadlines too. She also gave a great insight into how to find work placements, and how painstakingly difficult it is to get into contact with the editors.

What was great about this event was that we were a group of bloggers who have had very different experiences and it was great to share these. I learned so much from talking to everyone, so all in all it was a great experience to inform people about my blog, but it also gave me so much enthusiasm to really get my name out there in the blogging world.

I am an aspiring film and entertainment journalist and MA student at the University of Exeter.
