3 Things You’d Be Mad Not To Do Whilst Living In Cornwall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter Cornwall chapter.

1) Eat a Cornish Pasty (and no I don’t mean one of those Ginsters things!!)

You’re living in the world-wide acclaimed home of the Cornish Pasty, so you’d be a fool not to try one. Deciding to try a pasty isn’t the hard part… the hard part is where to get your pasty from. Walking through the high street in Falmouth, or Truro, you are surrounded by numerous pasty shops: Rowe’s Cornish Bakery, Warrens Bakery, Oggy Oggy’s Bakery, Berryman’s Bakery, Portreath Bakery, The Cornish Oven AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON.

So whether it be a traditional Cornish medium steak pasty, or perhaps a chicken pasty, or even a festively-themed turkey and stuffing pasty, choose your supplier wisely.

If in doubt, follow the Cornishman’s guide to the best pasties in Cornwall. Happy tasting!

2) Go swimming in the sea!

Growing up in Cornwall, it still amazes me when people say that they have never swam in the ocean. SERIOUSLY?!

Not only do you get to experience Cornwall’s beautiful beaches (and trust me, there are many), but sea swimming is great for your mood and health (and hangovers!).

3) Have a Cornish Cream Tea

A delicacy in Cornish tea rooms: “The Cornish Cream Tea”. Whether it be as a light snack in the summer months, or a comforting sweetness with a warm cup of tea in the winter months, having a Cream Tea whilst in Cornwall is a necessity. Warm homemade scones, with sweet strawberry jam and fresh clotted cream.

Please be warned, when consuming your Cornish Cream Tea you will inevitably be entered unwillingly into the great Cornish debate: jam first or cream first? Of course the traditional Cornish way would be put spread the jam on first, followed by a big dollop of clotted cream… but you will always get those annoying people from Devon trying to tell you otherwise!
