My Two Favorite Brands and Their Female CEOs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Endicott chapter.

As a teenage girl in the 21 century, I appreciate a good aesthetic brand and a female in-power. I wanted to go into college with some good products and vibe to help me transition into a small female badass. Months before leaving, I found the two brands that where exactly what i was looking for: Glossier and Ban.do.

Emily Weiss created Glossier, the million dollar company, through her blog, Into the Gloss. But, this is not exactly where she started in her career. Looking through Emily Weiss’s life you can see that she is a pro at connecting herself to the right people. She started out babysitting for her neighbor who worked for Ralph Lauren, then turned that opportunity into assisting at Conde Nast. Into the Gloss was her next step, and has now become a highly respected and enjoyed makeup, haircare, and skincare blog. It’s kind of like every cool older sister advice you would ever need. That then adapted into the millennial pink, minimal skincare and makeup company, Glossier. Emily Weiss told The Cut that she wanted to “feel like the brand itself was a close friend”. Their slogan is “Skin First, Makeup Second” and you can see that immediately by scrolling through their Instagram. The brand is heavily marketed and popular on Instagram (@glossier). The account doesn’t really look like it’s run by a company, but an influencer or professional photographer is the one behind the scenes. Emily Weiss and Glossier give me the aesthetic I needed and the amazing beauty products to help.

On the other hand, ban.do helps me get organized. This also millennial pink brand is run by the equally as fun Jen Gotch. She also started at the bottom waitressing, and worked her own way up and turned a vintage hair piece website into what ban.do is now. Ban.do now works with all different companies, such as Starbucks and Levis, to give women aesthetically pleasing, and pretty clothes, drink ware, and stationary. In my opinion the best part of Jen Gotch’s brand are the sayings they put onto their products. Some examples are: “I am very busy”, “serious business women”, and “this is only the beginning for you”. It is perfect for any working female cause not only do they look good but they also add a little motivation too. Jen Gotch is very vocal on her Instagram (@jengotch) and podcast (Jen Gotch is Ok Sometimes) about her struggles with mental health. To me it shows that you can still have struggles, but with enough determination Jen Gotch’s company is thriving and so is she.

Both of these women and their companies inspire me that you can mix what you love and what you do for a living. Jen Gotch and Emily Weiss both made a name for themselves by themselves, and are now through everyday things like skincare or a planner help other women reach their goals.
