The Secret to Scarves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

It wasn’t until this fall when I understood the power of scarves. And I’m not talking about their amazing ability to cover up hickeys. I own a lot of scarves, but I’ve never been confident in my ability to wear them. It may sound silly, but I just haven’t understood how to properly tie them or what kind of outfit goes with a scarf.

Until now.

I bought this incredible red scarf with leopards roaming on it from a store in Boston this summer and now I can’t get enough of it. The old me would have only worn it with black – too scared to pair it with colors that don’t go – but now I realize the power in pairing it with a variety of outfits, colors, and styles to add an extra something to an otherwise plain outfit. I’ve been wearing it with blue maxi-dresses, yellow shirts, fall sweaters and summer ensembles. Wearing a uniquely patterned scarf totally changes an outfit. The stranger the combination, the better. It makes you look London-chic in the effortless but sophisticated way.

A leather jacket, flirty beige lace dress, combat boots, and a crazy patterned scarf? Chic. A business formal outfit with a colorful scarf? Spot on. Jeans, a plain shirt, boots and a fun scarf? The perfect outfit for class. There are so many options and ways to wear scarves that I highly recommend everyone spicing up their wardrobe with them!

She talks too fast, eats too slow and over-analyzes too much.  When she’s not telling long-winded stories, sitting alone at the dinner table, or staring off into space, Jessica loves all things creative. Screenwriter, play director and poet at age 9, songwriter and choreographer at age 16, now, at 23, all she really wants to do is write, help others, and post Instagrams.  As a social media coordinator for multiple fashion brands, and a post-grad writer for Her Campus, she gets to do just that. Jessica is a Midwestern girl from the suburbs of Chicago, but she fell in love with city living during a summer internship in the Big Apple, and now calls NYC home. Jessica loves chocolate milkshakes, dance parties, Chippewa Ranch Camp, Friends re-runs, Chuck Bass and of course, spending time with her fans (read: family and friends).
