As someone who is always searching for fashion inspiration, I’m happy to report that I have found a new source!
I recently began watching ABC Family’s hit show, Pretty Little Liars, and have become obsessed with the distinctive styles of each of the four main characters.
For those of you who have not seen the show, it combines scandal, mystery, suspense, romance, and style. The show follows the lives of four former best friends—Aria, Hanna, Emily, and Spencer— who are being harassed via text messages, emails, photographs, and occasional messages written in lipstick on mirrors by “A,” an anonymous character. “A” knows all of their deepest and darkest secrets, secrets that were only known by their friend Alison, who was recently murdered.
The show is now in the second half of its second season. Not only does the plot have me hooked and craving every week, but each of the lead characters have a distinct and unique fashion sense.
Aria
Aria, who just returned from a year abroad with her family, is mature and worldly—both elements reflected in her style. Her cultural sophistication influences her fashion choices. She uses layers in darker hues and mixes rich materials and patterns. Her style is feminine and bohemian with an edge. Aria seems to have an addiction to boots—leather, suede, flat or rounded, she wears them all—which she pairs with dresses and skirts.
Hanna
Hanna, the Queen Bee of the school, has a trendy, girly style. She always wears glamorous and feminine ensembles, such as ruffled blouses with black shorts and a cropped blazer. Many of her outfits include a sharp blazer to contrast the rest of her flirty attire and pull her entire look together. Hanna always has a number of large rings adorning her fingers. Emily
Emily, the sporty girl of the group, has a laid-back, athletic style. As the sporty girl of the group, Emily has a laid-back, athletic style. She is always sporting her cargo messenger bag, which is usually accompanied by sneakers. Soft and slouchy tops, such as raglan tees, paired with denim miniskirts or cute board shorts complete her look. American Eagle has a number of sporty, casual pieces to imitate Emily’s look.
Spencer
Spencer has a preppy look that reflects her family’s country club lifestyle and her Ivy League aspirations. She always looks polished and put together. Her classic look includes Oxford flats, structured shouldered shirts, and boyfriend jeans. An avid hat-wearer, she sometimes goes for a sophisticated French vibe, adding a beret to her long double-breasted coat and heels.
