The Dos and Don’ts of Wearing Leggings

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Yes, I know that we’ve all heard it a million times before, “Leggings are not pants.” Well, that’s why they are
called “leggings.” DUH.

Just because they are not pants, does not rule the black stretchy goodness out of having a crucial role in my wardrobe. There are certain times when jeans—skinny, different washes, boot, flare, whatever—just won’t make the cut.

My favorite classic, cozy chic look of a chunky sweater and leather boots just doesn’t have the same effect when paired with denim instead of my black cotton spandex.
How about when I’m pulling an all-nighter before my Econ midterm in the library – does society really expect me to sacrifice comfort for jeans?

Sorry, I’m not sorry. A girl’s gotta fight for her right to wear leggings.

When getting dressed for any occasion it’s important to always adhere to the old fashionista adage, which
apparently someone who is not my mother made up, “leave something to the imagination.”

In all honesty, this is the golden rule when it comes to avoiding a legging faux pas and rocking the “no-pants” look.

Straight up, to the girls who insist (I’ll give the benefit of the doubt and assume this look is unintentional) on sporting leggings that are just too sheer—please do some light stretching in front of the Bed Bath & Beyond mirror taped to the back of your door so you can see for yourself that this situation is not exactly cute.

Another big don’t of wearing leggings is wearing them with crop tops. General rule of thumb: if you can see the
waistband of your leggings, it’s probably a good idea to go for some skinny jeans instead. If in any way the shirt you have selected to pair with your leggings gives those around you such opportunity to craft the mental image of a hoofed limb of a certain mammal that inhibits the Sahara desert, I sincerely encourage you to opt for jeans or put on a longer top. Much appreciated.

Leggings are a great, trendy and comfortable article of clothing that should be a staple in every girl’s closet; just make sure that your legging-ensemble doesn’t pose a threat to the comfort of those in your vicinity. Many girls will be quick to dismiss leggings as a fashion don’t, but there are many ways to wear leggings that are a total fashion do.

With that mini-rant aside, I absolutely recommend leggings as a vital part of every girl’s casual wardrobe.

Wear Responsibly.
