The Official Sweater Guide for Colder Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

Let’s face it: It is cold out. We have officially said goodbye to warm days and said hello to the brisk wind. It’s time we dress the part without sacrificing our warmth. Below is a complete sweater guide to all the styles and trends that will keep you cozy and comfortable while still looking fabulous.

We love our traditional, basic, white crew neck sweater, but it’s time we expand our horizons and try something new! The cowl-neck turtleneck is the perfect style for those days where you need a little extra coverage. They fit slightly looser than a traditional turtleneck and really compliment the body. They can be worn with nearly any type of pant or legging and can be layered with coats and scarves depending on temperature.

Another trend we have been seeing a lot of lately is the lace up style on shirts. Sure, it’s perfect for that seductive bodysuit going out, but it can also be made practical in your everyday sweater. Pair it in a soft knit wool with a pretty pastel tone, and you will be all set for around the holidays. It adds that edgy touch to a classic V-neck sweater, while showing a little skin.

Moving on to the sweaters where you’ll have to layer, the sleeveless turtleneck and the fur sweater vest are different ways to incorporate the piece into your outfit. Layer a jacket on top or a cotton long sleeve underneath, and you will be ready for a day in class or an evening at dinner. They are a new way to work the sweater trend.

If you’re feeling a little bohemian and comfy, try a sweater poncho or the classic long cardigan. These pieces look perfect with ripped jeans or your favorite leggings. They add an effortless, yet put together feel for an everyday look, while being so comfortable. It will feel like you’re wearing pajamas.

Last, but certainly not least, is the off the shoulder trend. This seems to be all over Instagram and the style sections! This look was big in the ’80s and is now making its big comeback, even in sweaters. Although it shows a lot of shoulder, the sweater happens to be moderately long with long sleeves and a warm, wool-like finish.

Try out all of these sweater styles this season, and you will surely find the one you love!
