Nicki Maggio: A Real Life Renaissance Man

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

Nicki Maggio is the man on campus. He just seems to be everywhere, whether it be in class, working on a production, hanging out with his wonderful friends, or running off to work at Ugg Australia on Newbury Street. Within the last year, Nicki, switched concentrations from Theatre Studies Acting to Theatre Studies Directing making him a busy, busy man. Maggio claims “I always had an inkling I wanted to direct”, making the transition from acting to directing an “easy” one.

Despite directing/producing 6 productions this semester, and having almost no free time for himself to relax, Nicki “absolutely loves it.” He loves being able to put a team together and a show together by being the “fundamental backbone of a production” and by “exploring plays and collaborating” with his crew mates on how to make a shared “vision”.

How did he get all these marvelous opportunities though after just switching concentrations? By doing the two Emerson musts; he got INVOLVED in every theatre company on campus (except for one which he eventually plans to join once he has more free time), and made great CONTACTS with great people in the Emerson community. He says that Anna Trachtman, Tanya Flink, being on the board of Rareworks Theatre Company, and acting in “Kidding Around” really helped him learn; therefore making him more successful with his positions this semester. By being involved he was able to have a stellar resume for when it came time to apply for the producing and directing positions.

Of all the things Nicki is doing this semester he is most excited about “working with new people…becoming more versatile…working on different types of productions” and most of all “learning” everything he can and more. Nicki will certainly be able to do this since he is working on or in six plus productions this semester of all different genres.

So what can we expect from Mr. Nicki Maggio in the future? Well, fingers crossed that he gets his dreams of becoming a “producer for commercial theatre, a freelance director” and to “live in Berlin” at some point in his life. It really seems that everything Nicki does and wants to do is for his love and passion for the theatre. His final parting message in response to the question “What do you want Emerson students to remember you by once you graduate?” is this: “I want them to remember the fun times we had together…I want them to know I learned from them and hopefully they learned from me as well…and that you can do anything if you are passionate about it, which is exhilarating.” Nicki then ran off to do more work, but left me feeling as if anything was possible.
