My Glam Review: January

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

If you’re a beauty junkie like me, then there is something you NEED to know about.  My Glam is a brand new monthly subscription service created by YouTube beauty guru, Michelle Phan.  For only $10 a month, you receive 4-5 deluxe samples or full sized products in a super cute reusable makeup bag!  Each item is specifically tested and picked out by Michelle and her team of famous YouTube stylists (such as MissJessicaHarlow and Macbarbie07).  You even take a beauty quiz on their website so they can customize the products to your specific tastes!  Once you receive your Glam Bag, you can watch tutorials made by the stylists showing you how to use your new products.  I know, it sounds too good to be true.

Unfortunately, I didn’t sign up in time to receive My Glam’s first bag in December (which included products from Urban Decay, Mai Couture, Tarte, and NYX).  But, I did get the January Bag!  The month’s theme was “Get back to nature”, and came in an adorable canvas makeup bag.  Every product was eco-friendly and good for you!  The items I received were a Freeman Cucumber Mask, Sheer Cover Concealer, Wen Hair Conditioner, and a nail polish by The Balm.

The Freeman Cucumber Mask was a full size product, which didn’t even fit in the bag.  It typically runs for $3.99.  It is a peel off mask, which kind of feels like I’m peeling off my skin, but it was really refreshing.  It has a nice, clean scent which isn’t too overwhelming.  Once it is peeled off, it actually feels like it has pulled out the impurities in your skin.  I would recommend taking a shower afterwards becuase it can get stuck in your hair and is really difficult to get out.

The Sheer Cover Concealer is my favorite product in this month’s bag beccause it has so much coverage.  This is also a full size product, which goes for around $30.  Can you believe that?  It goes on smoothly and does not feel heavy at all, but it still manages to hide discoloration.  The only issue I had with this product is the fact that they only sent out the Light/Medium shade and not everyone is Light/Medium shade obviously.  This was a mistake on My Glam’s part, but thankfully the shade matches my skin tone.  If I was a darker skin tone, I would have been very upset and would have complained to the company.  Other than that, I am extremely happy with this product!

The When Hair Conditioner was a deluxe sample size (the full size costs around $30).  This was a really interesting product because it is a conditioner that you are supposed to use in place of a shampoo.  It does a great job of cleaning your hair, while still keeping it hydrated and healthy.  It has a delicious almond mint scent, which stays on your hair all day.  The directions also say you can use it as a leave in conditioner during the day, but this made my hair feel weird and kind of dry.

The last product could have been an eyeshadow or a nail polish by The Balm.  I was hoping for an eyeshadow because I am obsessed with eye makeup, but I received a nail polish in the shade “You’re So Hot and Gold” which costs $10.  This is an awesome glitter polish with small gold sparkles and larger iridescent glitter.  It looks great over pretty much every color, and it even has enough sparkles to look amazing on its own.  The only problem is that it is a bit difficult to get off, but that goes for every glitter polish.  I really like to put this polish over my nails when I accidentally smudge the polish underneath.  It does an amazing job of hiding any imperfections and also adds another dimension to your nail color.  It’s also really fast drying, which is always a plus!

Overall, I am extremely pleased with what My Glam has offered so far.  The high quality products, deluxe samples and full size products, and the fact they get you a new makeup bag every month makes it a steal.  You easily make back the $10, so it is completely worth it.  I can’t wait to see what they have in store for next month.
