Glee Season 5 Premiere: What you need to know post Cory Monteith

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

All eyes have been on the musical comedy series Glee since the recent death of its star, Cory Monteith from heroin and alcohol abuse. Many wondered how the show would go on, if it would go on at all. The season five premiere on September 26th made it clear: Glee is back with a vengeance and not going anywhere. Here’s what you missed from the show’s awaited comeback.

Gleetlemania: It’s almost surprising that after four seasons, Glee waited until now to do their take on the legendary sixties rockers. To make up for the anticipation, they’re dedicating the first two episodes of the new season exclusively to the Beatles. The entirety of the “Gleetle” covers can be found on iTunes now.

“Kartie”: Kartie, Kittie and Artie, or whatever you call them are now officially an item. We saw the makings of a teenage romance brewing last season, when Kitty gave Artie the push he needed to go to film school. While in the beginning in the episode, they keep their love a secret; Tina Cohen-Chang eventually ousts them.

Speaking of Tina: Poor Tina Cohen-Chang has always gotten the brunt of the blow when it comes to plot lines. After being denied solos, lusting after Blaine only to be rejected, and getting dumped twice, it’s not wonder she’s a little bitter now in season five. The next episode “Tina in the Sky with Diamonds” will hopefully show her getting out of her funk.

Sue Sylvester is back: The malicious, yet hilarious cheer coach is back and better than ever. After being fired in the last season for allegedly having a gun in school, she has been cleared of her charges and is back as principal of William McKinley thanks to her own devious ways.

Klaine is heading down the altar:  At long last, the fan favorite couple, Kurt and Blaine are back together and apparently planning to tie the knot. Despite the fact that the show is featuring yet another teen engagement which seems eerily similar to Finn and Rachel’s, you can’t help but feel happy for the pair.

So what happens next? Will Kitty and Artie go the distance? Who will go to prom with who? And how will the characters react to the eventual death of Monteith’s Finn Hudson? Find out by watching Glee, every Thursday at nine on Fox!
