Fun Things to do in Boston During Parents Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

Whether you’re a freshman or a senior, we all know what Parents Weekend means: showing your parents around your new city and what you do for fun. There may also be free meals and a hotel room to sleep in for the night. So while your parents are here exploring your new home, here are some fun things to do.

Watch the Head of the Charles Regatta

This year is the 50th anniversary of the Head of the Charles. The event is along the Charles River began in 1965 and invites the world’s best crew teams for the ultimate two-day rowing competition. It starts at the Boston University DeWolfe Boathouse in Boston and ends at the Artesani Park in Brighton, so get to the bridges (BU, River Street, Western Avenue, Weeks Footbridge, Larz Anderson and Eliot) on October 18 and 19 to catch a great view. The Head of the Charles is always a fun thing to do with your family.

Check out the A Cappella Competition

As Emerson students, most of us love a cappella. Head up the street to Faneuil Hall on either October 18 or 19 from 12-4PM to see a cappella groups from all over New England compete in the 18th annual A Cappella Competition.

Visit the Museum of Fine Arts or Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Emerson students (and other schools around Boston) get free admission into both museums, but your parents don’t. Luckily, you can pick up museum passes at the Reserve Desk in the Iwasaki Library. Just don’t forget to return the passes within 48 hours or you’ll receive overdue fines.

Take Your Parents to Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner

If your family isn’t too familiar with the city, you can always bring them to a restaurant you tried and loved. My favorite place to bring family or friends visiting me is Max Brenner: Chocolate by the Bald Man on Boylston. If you want a good breakfast, head to The Paramount in Beacon Hill.

Tour Fenway Park

Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, take a tour of America’s most beloved ballpark. Tours are available year-round begin at the top of every hour. It’s $12 for students and $17 for adults. Hint: if you take the T to Fenway, get off at the Kenmore stop.
