Emerson Students’ Holiday Traditions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

It’s that time of year again! Boston Common is sparkling with lights and a chill is in the air. In spite of the dread of impending finals, the Emerson campus is buzzing with holiday cheer! Students are eagerly awaiting their journeys home for the holidays, and many are looking forward to reliving some of their favorite seasonal traditions.

For some, the traditions are many and varied. Sarah Mania, a junior Writing, Literature and Publishing student, says, “One tradition we have is to serve dinner to the residents at the YMCA on Christmas Day, and it’s really nice because it makes their day so much happier, and I love being able to do it.”

She also reminisces about her family’s annual Christmas Eve drive to view the lights, saying “We go past the Home Alone house, and there’s one house that plays music with a light show so that’s always fun to watch.”

Other students are excited to get the family back together and play some games. Joanne Paquin, a Junior Journalism major and Publishing minor, is excited for “hour-long Sorry games with my family that get way too intense.” Dakota Damschroder, a Junior WLP student, concurs; her family plays a special card game each year, and “it’s one of those rare moments where the entire family comes together.”

For some, like Claire Torres, a Junior WLP major, some traditions never get old. She says her favorite is “definitely my advent calendar. It’s a carved wooden Santa that my mom fills up with candy for me every year.”

Personally, I’m excited to race around like my family does every year on Christmas Eve, cramming in fun visits with everyone we don’t see on Christmas Day.

Whatever holiday tradition you’re looking forward to, hang in there! It’s almost break, Emersonians!

Ashley is a senior Writing, Literature, and Publishing major at Emerson College. She will graduate in December 2016. She loves playing with clothes and make-up, traveling, and drinking way too much coffee. Friends and family, cute animals, (especially her own), and dessert make her happy.
