Are You Ready for a Tattoo?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

So you’ve decided. An anchor, about two inches tall, on your left wrist. You’re positive that this is the tattoo you want, and you’ve told yourself (and your family members) a million times that this is what should be inked on your body forever. But… maybe a key on your right back shoulder would look better. Or maybe the anchor isn’t what you want at all. Maybe you don’t want a tattoo, but just another piercing instead!

Relax, collegiettes! We’ve put together a checklist of things to consider, so you can be certain that you’re ready for a tattoo. Take a look at the list below before you make that big commitment:

  • You’ve been thinking about it for at least three months.
  • More than half of your immediate family members are not outraged.
  • You know what it will look like when you’re old, and you’re okay with it.
  • It has meaning to you, and always will.
  • You have a trustworthy tattoo parlor to go to.

If you confidently checked off all of these points, it’s time for a tattoo! If not, it may require a little more thinking. But if you’re serious about wanting a tattoo, you’ll get there eventually.

A tattoo is a really big commitment. Don’t forget, whatever you get inked is going to be there forever–unless of course you want to get laser removal. Trust me, you don’t want laser removal, because it’s expensive and painful. Also be mindful of where you put it. Though it isn’t right, people do still judge books by their covers. If you’re interviewing for a job and a future employer sees your tattoo, they may be slightly turned off (regardless of that being fair or not).

But don’t let all of this deter you! If you know you’ve picked something that is going to be meaningful forever, then go ahead and get it tattooed on your body. Your body is a canvas–your canvas–and you deserve to do as you please with it, as long as you think about it first!
