1. Plan like it’s going out of style

When going Black Friday shopping, it’s best to have a strategy in place—know where all of the sales are and how you are going to get to them. Each store will open at a different time, and even then, items may not be available within that given store for another few hours. Have a plan of attack.

2. Know what you want

Know exactly what you plan on getting and for whom. I like to make a list of friends and family and include what I may get them for Christmas and where I plan to get it. Although I know I will probably deviate from my list, this ensures that I will complete it. You don’t want Auntie Barb to be left without a gift under the tree while you have four new scarves.

3. Don’t go in alone

As a shopaholic, I can honestly say that I hate shopping alone. Consider Black Friday shopping a team sport. Shopping with friends or family is a good way to still spend turkey day with people you love while also getting your shopping done. Side note: Make sure everyone’s cell phones are turned up loud; it’s very easy to get lost and separated when the stores are packed full of people.

4. Dress for the weather, not to impress

Believe it or not, a lot of Black Friday shopping means waiting in long lines out in the cold to get into stores to purchase an item. Remember, stores have a capacity. Therefore they cannot let hundreds of people in at one time. But don’t let having to stand in line deter you. Simply dress for the weather. Layers and comfy shoes are key when it comes to shopping.

5. Remember it’s the holidays—don’t get greedy

The woman in front of you in line just bought the very last TV the entire store had, but so what? It’s not her fault and nobody likes an asshole. So don’t be one. Move on—you will still be able to get it, just maybe not on that very night. Don’t make a scene.

6. Get gift receipts

Gift receipts are your best friend. Although you may think you found the perfect banana yellow knit sweater for your brother, you may be wrong. Make sure you ask for a gift receipt so that he can return it and get something that he really likes.

7. Check prices

Different stores will sell the exact same item for more or less money. Do your research to ensure you are spending the least for the same exact product. Some stores will even price match other stores in order to give you the best deal. It never hurts to ask.

8. Stay fueled

Black Friday goes all night Thursday, all day Friday and in some instances even all day Thursday. Contrary to popular belief, you will get hungry. Yes, I know you feel like you just ate enough turkey and stuffing to fill you for a month, but you will need to fuel up. Shopping means walking and exerting energy makes you hungry. Throw a granola bar in your purse and plan to hit up the food court in the mall.

9. There is always Cyber Monday

If all else fails and you don’t feel like going out the night after Thanksgiving, there is always Cyber Monday! You can get all of the same deals from the comfort of your own bed behind your computer. Just remember you have to pay for shipping.
