The Elon Network

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

Are you a freshmen or sophomore and looking for some career advice that is geared toward you? The Elon Network is a student-led initiative that provides career related guidance to underclassman as they try to figure out what they want to do and what their passions are. The event will be held on April 4in Alumni Gym and includes food, music, and free door prizes, including Dell printers.

“The idea was started by Charley Costa and Mike Nowak who are seniors and realize the job market is going to be tough for the next few years. Mike wanted to create an event when underclassmen could network with students who have had good internship, jobs, or conducted research,” said Christine Mavraganis, one of the planning committee members. “I feel the event has great potential to attract students because it is planned by a committee of 9 students. No Career Services, no professors. Just us, a few seniors, juniors, and sophomores.”

The Elon Network allows students to learn the importance of not only networking as a junior and senior, but also the value of it as an underclassman. Students will have the opportunity to network with upperclassmen from different majors including seniors who plan to attend graduate school. The event will be split up by “major” or general category the presenter falls into to make it easier to navigate.

In addition to networking skills, students will be able to have their resume reviewed, learn how to dress professionally and learn how to create an elevator pitch. Brooks Brothers and Ann Taylor Loft will be there to help with “dressing for success” and there will be trunk shows.

“As an underclassman, I realize the market is going to be difficult after I graduate and I do not feel like it is too early to start networking with more experienced students,” said Mavraganis.
