Cultural Creativity: Elon’s Cultural Calendar

Cultural Creativity: Elon’s Cultural Calendar

Each semester, we all receive Elon’s Cultural Calendar in the Mail Center. Inside its pages, we find all the cultural events on campus for the semester, required by many classes in an effort to improve the culture of Elon’s students. We hear about all the big events, such as the spring convocation with Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient.

But, speaking from experience, we don’t hear a lot about the best events the cultural calendar has to offer! Packed with many events, there is something for everyone!

The Department of Performing Arts Presents “She Loves Me”, February 9-12th, McCrary Theatre

There is always something going on in McCrary, as the performing arts department is constantly at work putting together stunning works of art for the entire campus to enjoy. The first event, “She Loves Me” opens this week! A story of anonymous pen pals who, in reality, work and feud together is classic, and the actors bring it to life onstage beautifully.  Perfect for Valentine’s Day, this is a “don’t miss” for collegiettes™ at Elon!

The Vagina Monologues, February 14th, 6:30 and 9:00 p.m., Yeagar Recital Hall

If you have not yet seen Eve Ensler’s brilliant work, I suggest you take the time out this year to see it. In its third annual performance at Elon, “The Vagina Monologues” is based on interviews by Eve Ensler with more than 200 women of varying age, nationality, ethnicity and more! This show, both hilarious and touching, is brought to the stage to raise awareness for women’s sexual health and strength and the National V-Day campaign to stop violence against women worldwide.

Symposium on Human Trafficking, April 11th, 5 p.m., LaRose Digital Theatre, Koury Business
Center

An event that should be very interesting! A panel of professionals is going to talk about issues related to human trafficking, a very large local and international problem that affects our world today. Afterwards, students will present posters related to the issues discussed during the panel.

Jazz Ensemble Spring Concert, April 13th, 7:30p.m., Pardue Court,

The Jazz Ensemble is incredibly talented at Elon! A select group of musicians, they perform some awesome big-band arrangements of songs and, of course, some classic jazz songs too. This is performed outside McCrary, so bring a blanket or chairs to take a listen and enjoy the tunes on what is sure to be a beautiful spring night.

The Elon Dance Company presents “Fused Moves”, May 3-5th, McCrary Theatre.

If you have not seen a dance performance at Elon, I highly suggest this show, which features the 2011-2012 Elon Dance Company, a group of students that presents original choreography by the faculty. Always entertaining, the powerful dancers of Elon bring contemporary ballet to the community with their incredible talent!

There are so many awesome events that Elon offers during the year. Take a look into the cultural calendar to find these awesome events and more!

– 2012 Political Debate Between the Elon Young Democrats and the Young Republicans, March 8th, Whitley Auditorium

-“Dancing Across Religions: Embodied Yearning for the Divine,” March 13th, Black Box Theatre
