10 Reasons Why Winter is the Best Time of Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

Winter is here. But that doesn’t mean we have to be sad about saying goodbye to the warm summery weather. There are lots of things to celebrate, from cozy sweaters to savory comfort foods. Here’s a list of some of the best things about winter:

Holidays

Just take a second to think about how many holidays are in the winter! Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years: the list goes on. Winter is such a festive time of year to spend with family and friends. You even get a long, needed break from school and work.

Comfy Sweaters & Accessories

Although it’s always sad to pack up your Jack Rogers and cut-off jean shorts, cozying up in a warm, fuzzy sweater is one of the best feelings ever. Plus you can easily accessorize your outfit with a knitted scarf, adding yet another layer of warmth. And don’t be afraid to rock those earmuffs or knitted headbands when it gets really cold out, they can definitely make an outfit!

Snuggling by the Fireplace

The smell of fresh burning wood is just one of the many signs that winter is here. And who doesn’t love snuggling up to a warm fireplace in a blanket with hot cocoa? Grab your cutie or some of your friends and spend some quality bonding time by the crackling fire.

Wintery Drinks

Everyone knows the holidays are just around the corner when the Starbucks red holiday cups come out of hibernation. Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Peppermint Mochas, Gingerbread Lattes, Chestnut Praline Frappuccino’s – what more could you ask for?

The Sight of Freshly Fallen Snow

While we may not all love the cold that comes with winter, the sight of freshly fallen snow is truly beautiful. It’s fluffy and fresh and you can use it to make homemade snow cones – yum! And on another bright side, snow means no school. Am I right?

The Cold Weather is an Excuse to Stay in Bed All Day

Who doesn’t love a pajama day in bed with Netflix to keep you company? The cold weather is a perfect reason to have a lazy day and stay snuggled up in the heat all day.

No Bikini Body Necessary

Has anyone ever heard of a hot ‘winter body’? I don’t think so. Winter is for hibernation, cuddling and hiding in baggy sweaters. So go ahead and eat that extra helping at dinner. You can worry about it in spring.

Comfort Foods

Ahh yes. The best part about winter is the comfort foods. Lasagna, mac and cheese, chicken potpie, French onion soup, mashed potatoes, warm apple pie – are you drooling yet?

Holiday Decorations

You truly know the holidays are here when you start to see the streets lined in lights, wreaths and other jolly decorations. Towns and cities come to life and look absolutely stunning during these months. You’ll never want them to be taken down!

Winter Sports

Many fun sports and activities are unique to only winter because they require snow and ice. Skiing, ice skating, snowboarding, hockey, snowballs fights, and more! Who doesn’t love a spur-of-the-moment family ski trip to the mountains in December?
