We all know how hard it is to find a good place to study, especially if your roommate is being loud (or your whole floor), if you are nervous, or just can’t focus. Depending on the kind of area that works best for your study habits, there are multiple places around campus that you can study at, or in, to help you prepare for upcoming work and exams.

Familiar Setting: Your classroom!

Visit your classroom after classes are finished for the day, so you can work on the topic you are learning in the same room. In most classrooms, there are white boards so you are able to work out problems on the board in larger print. You can also practice presentations! Personally, this is a big one for me when I am preparing for a big exam just because I am reinforcing what I have already learned in the place I have learned it. Just know that some buildings lock their classrooms after operation hours, but you can check with your professor beforehand to make sure it’s open.

Quiet Place: Study rooms!

In both the dorms and the library there are study rooms available for students. In the dorms, they are first come first serve, but students are able to reserve the study rooms at the library for free and for as long as they want. This is great for group work, when you know you will need to be using the library resources, or if you simply need a super quiet place to study. Remember to check out the library hours before you plan on studying though so you aren’t interrupted at closing.

A space with white noise: Nicarry study hall, Master’s Center Mineral Gallery, the Bird Cage, or the first floor of the library!

These locations are quite sporadic, but they are all places where there might be some background noise, but it’s still fairly quite. The Nicarry study hall is located on the second floor of Nicarry. It is small and for the most part, fairly quiet other than during class transitions. The Master’s Center Mineral Gallery not only has tons of rocks, but also has a seating area. This location also has a printing station and is right next to bathrooms if you are planning on staying for a long period of time. Plus, if you need a study break- we have rocks! The Bird Cage is great because it is in the BSC, so if you want food there are plenty of places to stop. This location also has traffic sometimes allowing some noise, but is typically pretty quiet. The first floor library is also never a bad idea.

A place with noise: Jay’s Nest, Blue Bean, or the Marketplace

These three places not only provide students with meals and drinks, but also a great place to hide out when you need to get work done. If you’re the kind of person who needs a public place to study that has music, these are all great places to study because we are constantly playing the school’s radio station and local radio stations.

Outside

One thing our campus has endless amounts of are fields. Feel free when the weather is nice to lay out a blanket or towel, pull out your flashcards, and get some vitamin D while you’re studying! If you’re not sure where to study outside, just look for the big grassy areas such as the Dell, or for quiet naturesque places like the gazebo by the lake or the Peace Garden.
