The Rise of Curves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

I think the world is finally coming to terms with the fact that the majority of women all over the world look absolutely nothing like the models that we see on the covers of magazines. Boobs, butts and hips are finally prevailing over thigh gaps, collar bones, and unrealistic flat stomachs. Society is actually evolving and embracing the curves that women are naturally supposed to have.

As someone who has always been curvy, and grew up thinking it was such a terrible flaw, it’s so refreshing to notice this change on social media, magazines, and in Hollywood. Arie’s movement to use REAL models, girls that you would see walking to class everyday, and standing in line with you at Chick-Fil-A, is a huge statement. They represent women of all different sizes and recognize their individual beauty.

I’m sorry but I don’t understand how we came to the conclusion that body types that are only achievable by unhealthy eating habits and depriving yourself of food to be the standard of beauty. Personally, I never really understood the transition. What lead to size 6-12 being the ideal size to 00-2 being the only sizes that the modeling industry recognized? A national survey has concluded that the average american woman wears a size 16-18, curves are obviously dominating our population. As much difficulty I have admitting this, I have to thank the Kardashians. Their influence on the media has allowed us to see curves as something to pride ourselves on. I have my issues with their TV show, but I love that Kim K is most famous for her butt and not for her thigh gap.

I’m hoping that Hollywood is reaching the point where it used to be when Marilyn Monroe was the most desired celebrity. She was an amazing icon that people still look to as the definition of beauty, and yet, she was a size 6-8 in today’s terms. How do we still see her as perfection but we don’t see the perfection of Melissa McCarthy, America Ferrara, Nicki Minaj, Rebel Wilson, Kat Dennings, Amy Schumer, and Jennifer Hudson? Every one of these influential women are completely proud of their curves and have spoken about how important it is to embrace every inch of yourself no matter how much body shaming you might endure.

It is so inspirational that others, like Joe Jonas, have seen the allure of models like Ashley Graham. Her fame is the embodiment of how curves are on the rise. Being the first plus size model to grace the front of Sport’s Illustrated is just the beginning of a new way of thinking. It is finally our time to shine. Curves are in style and I think it’s the best trend that society has seen in a long time.
