An Open Letter to the Person Judging My Greek Letters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

To whom it may concern,

Yes, I walk around campus some days wearing an over-sized t-shirt with my sorority letters and running shorts. Yes, I have a sticker with my letters on the back of my laptop. So what you may see is “just another sorority girl” but your stereotype is wrong.

There is so much more to Greek life than what meets the eye, and there is so much more to me than just my Greek letters.

You judge Greek life because you think that all it consists of is partying and gossiping, but it is so much more. Through my sorority I found a support system of 184 girls that is unlike any other. My sorority has instilled in me values that I’ll carry for rest of my life, and taught me things about myself that I may have never discovered on my own. As a member of the Greek community I am presented with endless volunteer opportunities for my philanthropy, and sisters who are constantly offering to help me study and do well in school. So yes, I do wear my letters proudly, and I’d like to continue to do so without being looked down upon as “just another sorority girl”.

This brings me to my next point, although I am proud of my letters, they are not the only thing I am proud of. There are other things on campus I am passionate about and involved in, and I’d probably walk around with shirts for them too if I had one for every day of the week.

Most people involved in Greek life are actively involved in other organizations as well. In fact, many chapters actually require that you be involved in something on campus in addition to your organization.

It is the things that my sisters and I do outside of our sorority that make us so unique, and allow us to bring so much together to the table as a whole. There are sisters who spend their summers volunteering in foreign countries, sisters who lead on campus in different clubs and organizations, sisters who play sports to represent our university, sisters studying to be doctors and lawyers, the list could go on and on. You can walk into our house, and you won’t find two girls who are exactly the same.

I don’t go around judging people based off of the organizations that they are involved in, so stop judging me for what I am involved in.

Sincerely,

A proud tour guide, Student Senator, Orientation Assistant, and Phi Mu.

I'm just a northern girl living in a southern world. You've probably seen me giving a campus tour or distracting friends in the library.
