10 Things That Happen When You Live In A Sorority House

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

I never would have thought I’d be the girl in a sorority, none the less a girl living in a sorority house. I decided last year to take a leap of faith and sign a lease to live with 15 other girls, and it has been one of my best decisions so far in college. When you live in a sorority house here are 10 things that are bound to happen.

1. You have a love/hate relationship with living in-house during recruitment. It’s great when you can roll out of bed and run down to practice, but then it becomes impossible to escape the recruitment madness. Your room is the lunch time hangout for all of your closest friends who don’t live in the house, and your closet is fair game to anyone who needs to change. When everyone else goes home after a long day of  practice or recruiting, you remain up because there are always a few stragglers you can’t escape conversation with.

2. You’re always up to date on all of the gossip. No matter if you’re actively seeking the latest gossip or staying out of it, you still always know what is going on. From events going on, to who has a crush on who you get to hear it all. Everyone comes by the house to hang out and chat so after sitting in the TV room for a day it’s like you know everything that is going on at the school.

3. You’re constantly getting dragged out. Whether it’s to the bar at night, or to shopping during the day someone always wants to go somewhere. You try to be strong and say no but end up tagging along for the adventure anyways.

4. You study a lot more than you thought you would. This was something that surprised me. But here’s what happens, when other people in the house are studying because they have exams, it gets quiet. You realize that even though you don’t have an exam, you still could brush up on some skills and study. It happens often and you realize you’re more caught up on school work then ever.

5. You never miss sorority events. Even if there is an event you’re only half interested in attending, you still end up there. You see everyone coming into the house for the event and end up socializing and going. Let’s be honest though, you’ll probably end up with some of the most points in the chapter.

6. The Bachelor Monday is a holiday. Whether you watched it before you started living in house, or its completely new to you, it becomes a Monday tradition. Everyone argues over who will win, laughs together, cries together and gets far too invested. It’s the one night of the week where no matter what you have going on, you make your way to watch it together.

7. Alone time is weird. When you’re constantly around people, it is very strange to be alone. There are the rare occurrences when everyone is in class or gone for the weekend and the house is quiet. Sometimes it’s easy to forget what it’s like to just lay on the couch without talking to anyone.

8.You have a support system like no other. Since everyone is living in such close quarters, everyone knows your business. When you’ve got a biology test you’re cramming for everyone cheers you on as you leave to take it. No matter what is happening, these girls are cheering you on, or being a shoulder to cry on because there more than just your sisters they’re your house hunnies.

9. People don’t understand your jokes. The inside jokes become a common form of communication. Conversations consist of strange references and bursts of laughter, so when other people are around they often look confused and lost.

10. You’ve got friends for a lifetime. You get so extremely close with the girls in the house, that you simply can’t imagine life without them. I still don’t quite know how I went 20 years of my life without this group of friends standing by my side.

I'm just a northern girl living in a southern world. You've probably seen me giving a campus tour or distracting friends in the library.
