Music

Coco jones

AKA Grammy Award winner for best R&B performance. From Disney channel star to a Grammy winner and all around just incredibly talented. Coco Jones has made her mark on music in the past year with her debut album and online presence. Not only is she incredibly talented but she is also so funny, so if you haven’t already, you should check out her music.

Flo

Flo is an R&B British girl group that has been quickly on the rise after their debut single “Cardboard Box” which found success on TikTok. They have since put out several more songs, and a song with Missy Elliot. If you miss music from groups like Destiny’s Child, their music is definitely for you.

Shows

Abbott elementary

Written by Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary is a mockumentary-style sitcom about a group of dedicated teachers and a tone-deaf principal at a Philadelphia public school who have the odds stacked against them as they do everything in their power to help their students. The show is funny and unique and is great for a binge-watching session or casually watching.

Swarm

Swarm is an Amazon original series created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers. Swarm is a horror comedy about Dre, a fan who decides to take things into her own hands to defend her favorite singer. I have not watched this show yet but I’ve heard great things about the show, and as a thriller lover, I’m excited to watch it.

Movies

The hate u give

Originally adapted from the book by Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give follows Starr Carter as she goes between her poor, primarily black neighborhood and her wealthy almost entirely white prep school. The balance is quickly shattered after she witnesses her childhood best friend killed at the hands of police brutality. I know some people don’t like this movie especially compared to the book, and while there were some aspects of the book that I definitely preferred, I loved this movie and would recommend the watch.

Miss juneteenth

Miss Juneteenth follows Turquoise Jones, who was a winner of the local Miss Juneteenth pageant granting her a full ride to an HBCU. While the former Miss Juneteenth winners usually go on to have successful careers, Turquoise’s plans get derailed after she unexpectedly gets pregnant with her daughter Kai. While struggling to make ends meet, she pushes Kai to compete in the pageant for the opportunity to win the scholarship.

My name is Stacey Addo and I'm the Campus Correspondent for HC at ECSU. I'm a senior at ECSU majoring in Communications. I oversee the chapter and love writing about beauty, entertainment, fashion, and culture. Outside of Her Campus, I am the Arts and Entertainment editor for the campus lantern, cohost a radio show on campus, and am a part of Eastern Television. I've previously written for College Fashionistas about fashion and small businesses. Over the summer I was an intern for CT Public Radio as a radio talk show intern where I was able to produce episodes for multiple talk shows. Currently I'm a partner for HCxUlta writing articles about hair care. In my spare time I love fashion, watching reality shows and baking. In my free time I love to read and watch mysteries and my current favorite is Only Murders In the Building on Hulu. I also love to crochet!
