Will Rubino: Eckerd’s Renaissance Man

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Eckerd chapter.

Will Rubino can most certainly be seen anywhere on campus because whatever event you attend at Eckerd, he’s there. Whether singing at open mic night or cheering at the basketball games, Will is all about supporting students and activities at Eckerd. Like many of our campus celebrities, Will is very charismatic and is sure to get you involved with campus life if you are looking for something to do. His office is located in the student activities office in brown hall so if you’re ever looking to get involved on campus stop by and say hello–he has a passion for helping students and is sure to provide you with a myriad of opportunities on campus.

What is your job here?:

I am the ECOS clubs and organizations intern.

What specifically do you do?:

My priority is to work closely with all the student-run clubs and organizations here on campus. I help with events or booking rooms for meetings or funding for events or anything really. Their finances, their plans, I’m there to just assist them with answering their questions or pointing them in the right direction. Also, I approve flyers and van rentals and residence life and service learning come to me too. I’m also the liaison between ECOS and senate and campus activities. Basically other duties, as assigned, too.

How did you get this job?:

As a student I was very involved with admissions and residence life and campus activities and honor counsel and supporting athletics and music on campus and as a senior I was an activator during autumn term, this was 2010-2011. At casino night, Fred [Sabota] came up to me and asked what I was doing next year and I said maybe going to grad school, he said OK and then Jim Annarelli [Dean of Students] said, “Will what he’s trying to say is we like you and if you want to stick around next year  we’ll try to make something happen for you.” So Fred and I started talking about this position, it seemed perfect.

Do you like your job?:

I love it. I’m always busy and involved with helping out the students. I was very involved as a student and I’m still right in the middle of all the activities, which is just a thrill for me. Helping students get involved on campus and figuring out their leadership styles, all that stuff. This campus is run by students and I get to help them with their execution of events and activities and it’s very exciting.

What are your favorite and least favorite parts of your job?:

Last minute requests are always hard but we do them anyway. It’s tough when students don’t follow the right procedures. There aren’t a lot of things I don’t enjoy. I guess the office just gets a little hectic at times. The best things are helping the students, going out to events and seeing the students happy and getting to host open mic night, I got to that as a student and I’m still doing that. Going to all the athletic events on campus and meeting new students. I just love seeing our students come in and helping other students

What is your dream job?:

I want to be a counselor, specifically a PhD psychologist. So, I’m looking at masters programs right now. I want to get a masters in mental health counseling and from there get a PhD in either clinical or counseling psychology, then practice counseling. Then from there do research and write books based off my experiences and my research and then do motivational speaking on what I think people can get out of life. Then maybe teach undergraduate students my love for psychology.

How did you hear about Eckerd?:

My parents both went here, they graduated in class of 1981. I’ve known about Eckerd since I was very young. When my family was on a beach trip just south of here my parents wanted to show my sister and me where they went to college. So we came here and we met the president of the college at the time, Peter Armacost. From that day on I was like, “I want to go to Eckerd, too!” So I applied and Eckerd was above and beyond the best school I looked at. I felt at home here.

How do you suggest students get more involved at Eckerd?:

From day one just go out and meet people. Talk to and shadow people that are involved in things and they’ll help you meet other people involved with things, then you’ll get involved with things and that will filter over to more things. You have to start somewhere, you have to go to activities and meet people.

What is the best thing you have experienced at Eckerd?:

All the opportunities here that I took advantage of helped me figure out who I am and what I wanted to do with my life. I came here not really knowing what I wanted to study, I knew I’d figure it out, and I did sooner than I thought I would, which was nice. My passion for helping people, I discovered that here. The coastal environment too. But mainly the opportunities Eckerd has provided and the self-discovery that I’ve had here.

Some girls have all the fun; Devon Elizabeth Williams happens to be one of them. A carb loving, liberal hailing from Lakeville, Massachusetts, Devon is a senior at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida pursuing a  major in Political Science with a double minor in Journalism and International Relations. After spending January 2011 in an intensive Winter Term program at the United Nations in New York, Devon realized that taking over the world will be more difficult than anticipated, but nothing that a vivacious red head in stilettos can’t handle. In her free time Devon is a bartending beauty queen who has a soft spot for blueberry pie, Broadway and the scheming antics of Blair Waldorf. When she’s not paddle boarding at the waterfront or laying out on Eckerd’s private South Beach you can find Devon singing in the alto section of the concert choir. At the end of the day Devon is thankful for Newport, RI, her family, Sadie the black lab, Paul Mitchell, her girlfriends, Cheetah, and rhinestones.
