Meet Our New Campus Correspondents

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Durham chapter.

My name is Helena and I am a third-year Liberal Arts (History of Art, Philosophy) student from St. Chad’s college. Although I’ve spent the past two years in the UK, I I originally lived and grew up in Vienna. I’m massively into magazines, print, photography and music.

Why did you apply to be a Campus Correspondent and what are your plans for the next year?

I love the idea of continuing to foster a welcoming platform so that anyone who is even vaguely curious about journalism is encouraged to try it out! Also, I’m excited to gain some insight into the organisational and structural aspects of the journalism industry itself. The biggest thing I want to focus on is creating a greater integration of Durham-specific content into our chapter. What topics are important to talk about from a Durham student’s perspective?

What is your favourite show to binge watch?

I’m really into my shows, so this is a difficult one to answer, but Peaky Blinders is definitely the one I rave about the most to my friends! In terms of proper binge-watching… Peep Show is always on in the background when I’m hungover or doing menial tasks, so I know pretty much every episode off by heart!

What is your favourite and least favourite thing about Durham?

My favourite thing is, without a doubt, all the sweet little cafés dotted around town. They become especially dear to me when my heating fails yet again, as they shelter me from my least favourite part: the weather and constant gloominess.

What is your favourite brunch food?

Eggs Florentine forever.

What do you see yourself doing after uni?

Although I am still pretty clueless, I would like to take a break from education for a while to get a feel for the publishing world by getting involved with small publications that I admire. Hopefully, this will involve lots of travelling too!

Hi guys, I’m Freya and I’m a second year History student from Cuths and I am so excited to be a Campus Correspondent this year!

How did you first get involved with Her Campus?

I signed up to Her Campus during fresher’s week after receiving an email about recruitment from the History department. Initially, I was too shy and didn’t really join in. However, I think about half way through the first term I braved it and wrote my first article and realised there was nothing to be scared of at all! During my year as Campus Correspondent I would love to continue to nurture the welcoming and accepting environment that encouraged me to get involved.

Do you have any pets?

Earlier this year I lost my beloved dog, Alfie. I miss him every day, he really was my best friend! To anyone who has lost a pet, I know it’s devastating and its perfectly legitimate to feel sad. I felt guilty and embarrassed for feeling so upset but I now know I shouldn’t have at all – its perfectly normal. Losing a pet is something that isn’t often taken as seriously as it should be.

If money weren’t an object, what place would you love to travel to and why?

There are so many places I would love to visit – it’s so hard to choose! I think if I had an unlimited supply of money I would go on a massive US road trip for at least a year and visit every state.

Leather or denim?

Definitely denim, I don’t really agree with the principle of real leather and denim is just so easy to wear, cheap (sometimes!) and comfortable (also sometimes!).

What’s your favourite book?

I am rubbish at choosing favourites, I can never do it. I have a favourite book for every mood; sometimes I love reading Harry Potter and sometimes I fancy a cheesey young adult novel. However, if I had to choose my top three books that I’ve read recently it would have to be Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo, The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead and Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee.
