Last night I went to see Gabrielle Aplin perform at the o2 academy, Newcastle with high expectations of a night of swaying to beautiful music. It’s safe to say Gabrielle did not disappoint. To my absolute delight she performed a mixture of songs from her new album, Light Up The Dark as well as some of her most artistic love songs from English Rain. I last saw her perform at V Festival three summers ago where ‘Please Don’t Say I Love You’ was a definite crowd-pleaser, despite her being relatively unknown in the music world at the time. This time it was no different with the audience singing verse after verse of the song back to her!

After 3 pleasant, melodic support acts, we were all ready for Gabrielle to take to the stage. From the upbeat, slightly edging towards ‘poppy’ renditions of ‘Together’ and ‘Sweet Nothing’, to emotional love songs such as ‘Home’ and a David Bowie tribute song, Aplin and her band gave us a note-perfect night that made me love her music even more. Anybody who enjoys listening to the likes of Birdy or James Bay would love Gabrielle’s music, especially the more ‘folky’, stripped-back songs from her EP and album, English Rain.

I am currently in my final year of studying English Literature at Durham University, England. I am hoping to become a journalist in the future, but in the mean time, I enjoy cheerleading, fashion and travelling, and of course, being the editor of Durham's Her Campus!
