Making Fall 2013 The Best One Yet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

IN: Exploring our Scrumptious City

OUT: Maxing out Food Points

Many of the university’s food favorites were cut due to construction. Have no fear though! Duke is very lucky to be located in one of America’s tastiest towns, as noted by Southern Living and Bon Appetit. Make sure to take advantage of the city’s culinary diversity throughout your four years. From the modest yet delightful array of eateries on Ninth Street to the colony of delicious restaurants located in Downtown Durham, there is no excuse not to eat beyond the campus grounds.

IN: Group Fitness Classes

OUT: Machines

Staying healthy seems to be engrained in the minds of our Blue Devil population. Upon entering both Wilson and Brodie on any given day, there will never be a time when you are not surrounded by students and teachers going about their regular workout routine. However, machines can become a little monotonous, making gym time quite a struggle. When in doubt about your exercise plan, try one of the group fitness classes at either of the gyms. Wilson has the more extensive schedule of the two gyms, offering classes in zumba, core blast, kickboxing, cardio dance and many more. Taught by enthusiastic instructors, every class is open to everyone! Bring along some friends and you can beat that gym slump we all go through from time to time. Also, fans of HIIT (high intensity interval training) should be excited to know that the class now meets five times a week instead of three!

IN: Franklin Street

OUT: Malls

Always GTHC, but the hamlet of Franklin Street should not be ignored out of pure pride. If you are in search of a dress for a date function or a much needed accessory to stand out in an interview, Carolina does provide our Research Triangle with tons of colorful boutiques that add an extra unique touch to any outfit. Downtown Chapel Hill truly appeals to any style. In search for that extra edge, Time After Time Vintage Thrift is listed as one of the 25 Best Vintage Clothing stores in the United States by GQ Magazine. If your style is more towards the preppy side, visit Uniquities and bevello for classy and colorful creations! Put aside your UNC prejudice and make a day of it. Your closet will certainly benefit from the excursion!

IN: DPAC

OUT: Driving out to Raleigh

Raleigh attracts major music and entertainment groups, but who really loves the drive? Yes, its only 20 minutes, but DPAC is bringing in some big names this school year. On the music side, DPAC will host Alabama, The Weekend, Jack Johnson, Neko Case and John Legend in their tours. Theater will also draw immense attention this year. Beauty and the Beast, So You Think You Can Dance 2013 Dance Tour, Once, and The Book of Mormon are just a few examples of the terrific productions that will be hitting our local stage. You are guaranteed an excellent evening of entertainment, while saving money on gas and cab fare! Further down the road, DPAC’S Christmas shows are just too amazing not to mention. How the Grinch stole Christmas, The Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol? What more could you ask for?
