Let it Go! Let it Go! Stay True to YOU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

By now, everyone (including John Travolta) knows that Idina Menzel, NOT Adele Dazeem, sang the powerful song “Let it Go” in Disney’s film “Frozen”. Written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, “Let it Go” won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 list. “Let it Go” is constantly played on the radio and has generated a huge YouTube following. But why has it become soooo popular?

The song aims to send a powerful message that encompasses feelings of freedom, strength, and love. Elsa, the ostracized Queen, finally accepts her gift of creating snow and ice. The song marks the beginning of her no longer conforming to society’s rules and for the first time feeling weightless because she no longer needs to hide who she truly is. The lyrics “And the fears that once controlled me can’t get to me at all” highlight her freedom and escape from hiding. But the lyrics that really stand out to me are “It’s time to see what I can do; to test the limits and break through”. I’m graduating in a couple of weeks, which means it’s time to enter the real world where I’ll face challenges that test me and my ability to succeed. “Let it Go” explains that the only way we can know who we are is by finding out how we deal with difficult situations and, as a result, how we grow as a person. Additionally, it teaches us the importance of being true to ourselves without having to hide part of who we are. So, it’s time to let go of insecurities and embrace your uniqueness! Doing so will create feelings of freedom that empowerment that help you chase your dreams, while staying true to who you are.
