It’s impossible to find a Duke student who does not know what Shooters is. It’s the place we somehow always end up at on Wednesday and Friday nights. It’s the only place you can shamelessly dance on elevated surfaces, ride a mechanical bull and not so shamelessly find yourself in the cage (yes, we can see your underwear). It’s the place we know and love and I couldn’t imagine Duke without it.
The woman behind the operation, Kim Cates, has become a celebrity around campus. In fact, many of you may even be Facebook friends with her. We all know she is the owner of Shooters, but that’s pretty much it. So, I thought this would be a good opportunity for us Duke students to get a little closer to the woman in charge.

Here are 25 things you didn’t know about Kim Cates:

1. I was born and raised in Durham County.
2. I didn’t go to college but graduated from Northern High School.
3. Since I was 4 years old I have been diehard Duke fan, in a house divided except I was the only one that was a Duke fan.
4. I have 3 brothers and no sisters, so I had to fight like a boy with them.
5. I love working with Duke students.
6. I am a diehard Duke Lax fan. I would say their #1 fan!
7. I am also a fan of Duke Basketball; love the DWB
(all around I try to support the everyone at duke, go to the games, charities and fundraisers).
8. I believe in living life to the fullest, you never know what tomorrow brings and cherish the ones you love!
9. I will not tell my age.
10. I have 4 beautiful grandchildren, 2 of which are Duke fans thanks to me.
11. I have never had children, so you wonder: how did I get grandkids? The easy way, my boyfriend of 22 years has 3 grown kids of his own, and they have their own name for me, “neenie” instead of grandma.
12. I am a hopeless romantic.
13. Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love to decorate the club, and I think I do a great job at it.
14. I have a bad problem of taking on more than I should.
15. I am very softhearted but sometimes people wouldn’t think it, since I have to be tough.
16. I stand tall but (short), in what I believe in. I will go down fighting for what I believe in.
17. TV shows I like are Criminal Intent, CSI: Miami, Sons of Anarchy, Law in Order-all of them, and I am a General Hospital fan.
18. I AM A COUNTRY MUSIC FAN.
19. Even though we play other types at Shooters, sometimes you have to open up your mind and listen. Music is a life of its own.
20. I can run heavy equipment.
21. When I was young I primed tobacco just to get the money to go skating on Saturday nights.
22. I grew up riding horses, cleaning stalls, the whole nine yards.
23. I am a hard worker.
24. I want my club to be known as the club who cares about you. I strive for that a lot.
25. If it wasn’t for Duke students I would be lost, they make me feel great!!

I am and always will be Duke’s #1 fan

Sabrina is a Junior at Duke University, and is double majoring in English and Public Policy. A born and bred South African, Sabrina has traveled to the USA to pursue her higher education. As well as being a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Sabrina is also Assistant Vice President for Recruitment for the Panhellenic Association at Duke. Sabrina has written for Duke's daily newspaper, The Chronicle and Duke's fashion magazine, FORM. After graduating, she hopes to attend law school preferably in her favourite city, New York. In her spare time, Sabrina vegges out to various fashion blogs, mindless TV (Pretty Little Liars anyone?) and online shopping (which borders on an addiction). If you manage to catch her in an energetic mood, she's probably on her way to cardiodance (or to the nearest mall).
